Better title Seven Games: An AI History
Revisado: 09-11-24
I found the subtitle "A Human History" completely misleading - its a computer history. There are entire books of the history of Chess, but here we begin with the Turk, and move to Babbage - just glancing off the huge names in the history like Philidor.
As with the opening chapter, where it concludes with "Checkers is Solved" (by a computer, grunting away for 18 years) I found this less an achievement than a sad tombstone. Yes, circuits with massive databases of human achievement, can, with their artificial speed and artificial evaluation algorithms draw or defeat people - at a very thing that only people cherish. Games are special, play and work, art and science, learning and teaching - but to a computer. Well, tell me what computer is going to enjoy listening to this audiobook. I didn't. I'd rather read an actual "A Human History", not a computer one.

In desperation, the family solicitor turns to Hercule Poirot to unravel the mystery....

Twisty Fun
Revisado: 03-08-24
As with all mysteries, one should never spoil them. This one is truly an English Manor House mystery. Hugh Fraser is a delight, and I enjoyed that Poirot doesn't come in until the 2nd act. On the downside, it was hard to keep track of who's who to such an extent I thought about restaring the audiobook once or twice. It isn't a Fairplay Whodunnit though.

Jurassic Park at the Hellmouth
Revisado: 10-18-23
A very fun Halloween title - just what I was looking to enjoy for walks in the woods. If something like Carlsbad Caverns suddenly had ghosts and monsters, but they never actually hurt anyone, what would happen? In this case, since it seemed safe , it becomes a high priced attraction. No expense spared for super secure tour vehicles on a rail through, in this case, a haunted forest where you can ogle and gawk at the beasties in the padded air conditioned comfort ... until it stops being safe.
Eventually the story has to stop being an extended chase (like zombie fiction) and provide actual explanations, which is where things slow down, but even then, its pretty tense and takes an unusual few turns. Very fun, and a good length for me.

Giant Jaws meets Dirty Harry
Revisado: 10-16-23
Its a giant Jaws meets Dirty Harry story, and few surprises. Clocking in at over 11 hours, this one could have easily been abridged. You get the infamous tough guy, now worn down, and a pretty well educated woman partner - they hate each other until they learn they can depend on one another. Essentially, its got the small town cop, the Quint, even the Richard Dreyfuss analog. However, as with many books - you get what you wanted. People get chomped, the shark takes a licking and comes back for a surprise giant finale on their July 4th (there is even a mayor analog for Jaws fans).

Sluggish
Revisado: 02-08-23
This seems a book written for audience for whom books were the major source of entertainment. It is slow to commence, and slow to the finish, and slow in the middle. Would make a decent 60-90 minute movie, but as an audiobook it is overlong by half. Not a very satisfying ending.

A Fab sequel
Revisado: 01-06-22
Building off Land that Time Forgot, and following a new protagonist in the prehistoric setting, this sequel is less concerned with the dinos than the people. Readers of 1918 must have been interested in the debate and theories of man's evolution, and ERB gives is snippets of several cultures and peoples. Much like the 1st, its adventure and romance at breakneck pace.

Revisado: 11-30-21
Put aside not just the Hobbit movies, and even all of the Lord of the Rings, no matter the medium. The Hobbit really stands alone - with a light tone, magic around every corner, talking animals and the tale of a peaceful man who finds he is better for a little chaos now and again

Historia
In one of his earliest cases, Ellery Queen confronts a murder in blue blood. From the very beginning, the Khalkis case struck a somber note. It began, as was peculiarly harmonious in the light of what was to come, with the death of an old man. Georg Khalkis, internationally famous art dealer and collector, died of heart failure. After his funeral, his attorney found that the will was missing and immediately called in the district attorney. When Inspector Queen and his son, Ellery, are brought in to solve the mystery, Ellery mentions the one place they have not searched for the will: the coffin.

Anothet fun early Ellery Queen novel
Revisado: 11-08-21
I went through this story quickly. Set during Prohibition, it is chronologically a younger Ellery than we have seen to date. There actually is a Greek and a coffin this time. As usualy, a very large cast to keep track of which is hard on audio. The narrator was fine. Several false solutions, and the final one was not one I guessed.
