Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Fun and intriguing
Revisado: 03-13-25
I loved the characters and the snarky dialogue. The mix of classic thriller and podcast commentary works very well. The narration is very good, and it makes sense due to the podcast element. I listen to many true crime podcasts, and this one sounded very realistic. Reminded me of “The Serial”.

Historia
The stuff of conspiracy theories makes for great, entertaining stories in movies, books, and television. And there is no shortage of subjects: from who really killed JFK to the truth behind 9/11. And then, there are subjects from alien invasions to the Moon landing was simulated - theories that are truly out of this world, which according to some, is flat. Many of these crazy concepts have jumped off the pages or screens to become so pervasive in our culture that thousands - even millions - subscribe to them as reality.

A skeptic’s skeptic
Revisado: 01-12-25
I expected a discussion of various conspiracy theories, and why people believe them. What I got was the founding publisher of Skeptic’s Magazine, who implies that all forms of religion are also conspiracy theories. Obviously many people have enjoyed this course, I just think you should go in knowing that he has an agenda.
I enjoyed the psychology, but really, is anyone surprised to hear that fear leads people to believe in conspiracy theories as a form of control? The psychological evidence is interesting, but ultimately it did not give me new insight.

Revisado: 08-31-19
Cynthia Voigt is an excellent writer, with a gift for creating fascinating and memorable characters. This is particularly true of the Mister Max series. I can’t recommend it enough. And the narrator is perfect.

Wonderful writing, wonderfully performed
Revisado: 07-08-19
I love Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe books, but not for their plots. In fact, I almost never remember who committed the murder - which allows me to read them over and over again. What I love about these books is the wit and style of the writing, and his wonderful characters - particularly Archie. (I would love to go out dancing with him, but wouldn’t dare anything more serious. He is the quintessential bachelor.) So I have been reading Stout for many years, and loved the wonderful Timothy Hutton TV series, but have never heard the books read aloud. I wasn’t sure about Michael Pritchard from the audio sample, but decided to trust the reviews. They were absolutely correct; I can’t imagine a better narration. The book is one of Stout’s best, and it is read perfectly. I can’t recommend this recording enough.

Historia
Now a number-one international best seller, Billion Dollar Whale is "an epic tale of white-collar crime on a global scale" (Publishers Weekly), revealing how a young social climber from Malaysia pulled off one of the biggest heists in history. In 2009, a chubby, mild-mannered graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business named Jho Low set in motion a fraud of unprecedented gall and magnitude—one that would come to symbolize the next great threat to the global financial system.

Sad, depressing story
Revisado: 12-11-18
I got tired very quickly of descriptions of hedonistic parties, and of a sad little man who doesn't seem able to exist without constant attention and praise. It is important, however, to look closely at the financial institutions who abetted his crimes due to their own greed.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Excellent!
Revisado: 12-06-18
I was captivated by this story and Will Damron's narration. I lived and worked in Silicon Valley during and after the tech boom, and the author's description of its culture and expectations was thoughtful and accurate. "Bad Blood" is a fascinating, well-written account of an amazing story, but it it is far more than that. You don't need to have any knowledge of business or the healthcare industry to read this book. It is a character study of how overwhelming ambition can pervert the soul. I highly recommend it.

Historia
For most of its 5,000-year existence, China has been the largest, most populous, wealthiest, and mightiest nation on Earth. And for us as Westerners, it is essential to understand where China has been in order to anticipate its future. These 36 eye-opening lectures deliver a comprehensive political and historical overview of one of the most fascinating and complex countries in world history. You'll learn about the powerful dynasties that ruled China for centuries; the philosophical and religious foundations-particularly Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism-that have influenced every iteration of Chinese thought, and the larger-than-life personalities, from both inside and outside its borders, of those who have shaped China's history. As you listen to these lectures, you'll see how China's politics, economics, and art reflect the forces of its past. From the "Mandate of Heaven," a theory of social contract in place by 1500 B.C.E., 3,000 years before Western philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, to the development of agriculture and writing independent of outside influence to the technologically-advanced Han Dynasty during the time of the Roman Empire, this course takes you on a journey across ground that has been largely unexplored in the history courses most of us in the West have taken. In guiding you through the five millennia of China's history, Professor Hammond tells a fascinating story with an immense scope, a welcome reminder that China is no stranger to that stage and, indeed, has more often than not been the most extraordinary player on it.

Disagree with his discussion of late Maoist period
Revisado: 08-08-16
I bought this book because I wanted to know more about early Chinese history, and Professor Hammond is certainly knowledgeable. I found I couldn't listen very long, however, before losing interest. There was no evidence of the passion I love in my favorite histories. I was going to give this a higher rating until he discussed the Maoist period, particularly the cultural revolution. He described this period mainly as a matter of internal party rivalry; he never mentioned the devastation and death that resulted. He never said Mao had any blame in either that, or the horrors of the Great Leap Forward.
