Historia
Welcome to Three Pines, where the cruelest month is about to deliver on its threat. It's spring in the tiny, forgotten village; buds are on the trees, and the first flowers are struggling through the newly thawed earth. But not everything is meant to return to life.... When some villagers decide to celebrate Easter with a séance at the Old Hadley House, they are hoping to rid the town of its evil - until one of their party dies of fright. Was this a natural death, or was the victim somehow helped along?

Historia
Sarajevo, in the 1990s, is a hellish place. The ongoing war devours human life, tears families apart and transforms even banal routines, such as acquiring water, into life-threatening expeditions. Day after day, a cellist stations himself in the midst of the devastation, defying the ever-present snipers to play tributes to victims of a massacre. A true story of a cellist's resistance helps to form this pivotal event in Steven Galloway's extraordinary novel.

The Decisions of War
Revisado: 03-28-19
The individual stories of Sarajevo's citizens bring the reality of war to light....the understanding as to why some fight, some hide, and some are defiant. A simple act of cello playing for 22 days for each of the killed citizens...even as snipers threaten to kill him...brings each of the other individuals to decide how they will mindfullly...not mindlessly...respond to war.

Historia
Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office.

Eleanor Oliphant will become fine
Revisado: 03-22-19
As a survivor myself, I believe Eleanor will spend the rest of her life getting better...but the upbeat title let's us know that there's hope...no matter how much the pain is from the past. The story reads somewhat !ike a mystery, adding hints along the way as to the past reality that Eleanor endured...and leaves us with an implied future of friends and...maybe even marriage. A great read for other survivors of childhood trauma.

Historia
Miss Julia, a recently bereaved and newly wealthy widow, is only slightly bemused when one Hazel Marie Puckett appears at her door with a youngster in tow and unceremoniously announces that the child is the bastard son of Miss Julia's late husband. Suddenly, this longtime church member and pillar of her small Southern community finds herself in the center of an unseemly scandal - and the guardian of a wan nine-year-old whose mere presence turns her life upside down.

A non-feminist feminist
Revisado: 03-18-19
Miss Julia finally realizes how much she assumed was being taken care of by her husband...with her interests in mind...was not so. After his sudden death, she decides how to ethically set things right. A little farcical at the ending but a good time is had at the expense of preachers and other men...who are self-centeted and condescending. "Women are like teabags. They discover how strong they can be when placed into not water!"

Historia
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it’s a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter.

Psychological thriller in the best sense
Revisado: 03-16-19
Thriller implies 'bite your nails ' action nowadays, but Chief Inspector Gamache uses a calm, peaceful approach in understanding who might want to kill and why. While explaining his crew's reasoning, one learns about yourself and the foibles of people in general. (But, from experience, I know that a killing arrow spins as it flies and does not leave pointed skin marks but a round hole. This is one flaw in the story.) It is still well worth reading.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Educated ... Or Controlled?
Revisado: 03-13-19
This book describes clearly the dangers of having one's reality formed by one person or family...the importance of seeing, hearing, feeling, and listening to many people's views of the world. More importantly, it describes the wrenching, emotional loss when one is rejected by family members. It also explains the trauma associated with replacing one reality with a newer, healthier outlook. It becomes clear that one needs outside education, counseling, and support to survive this transformation.
If you've suffered childhood trauma, this is a 'must read'... to know there is hope with your continued effort and resilience!

Historia
Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces - behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe - detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.

Architect it's not
Revisado: 09-02-17
Although the architect is the main character, the story gives insight into the ethics of individuals during the very trying times of World War II...gives you a chance to test your own ethics when considering the choice of your own death over helping humans who are not known to you.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

All the Light We Cannot See
Revisado: 07-25-17
The descriptions enhance your experience of the feelings and a of the World War II participants and helps you understand how each got caught up in the life they lead. How it is easier to judge them from an historical prospective than from within their lives. An amazing book...but be prepared to be saddened.
