Historia
Like many well-to-do Upper East Siders over the age of 65, esteemed art appraiser Percival Skinner had planned to spend his retirement living off his savings. But a market correction has left him living below his prior means. One day he’s visited by a dapper fixer in search of a famous work by a Renaissance master. Skinner knows the work well: The original was owned by his ancestor, and was passed down through his family over the generations. If, as an intermediary, he can coordinate a sale, a small fortune awaits. Problem is, he might not be the only one on the make.

wished it was longer!
Revisado: 02-18-24
I could have listened to John Lithgow unfold the MOMA NYC snobbishness and old age for another 6 hours. Lincoln Highway was wonderful but too long. This book was almost a fragment.

Historia
Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed.

Better than I expected.
Revisado: 10-28-23
I thought this was going to be more of Atwood's man bashing, vis a vis Handmaiden, but it's better than that. Although a very short listen, it works. Huber narrates a little TOO close to an irritating 15 year old's nagging voice in the beginning, but as the character matures, so does her voice, so that works too. Worth the time.

Historia
Surrounded by secrecy, it is home to the wildest dreams and darkest nightmares. Incredible amounts of money have been lavished on it. The best minds of two generations have labored to build it. And somehow, bit by bit, it is claiming the Earth's most valuable resource - its children.

Worth every second! Adult sci fi at its finest!
Revisado: 10-28-23
It's a really long story, especially spread over four full length volumes, but well worth the time! Set in a too-probable future where rich old men seek eternity at the expense of poor kids. One of the best 'side bars' are the advertisements and news stories woven into the plot, which gives you a real feel for the society we've evolved into. Teachers still teach, kids try to avoid learning, big business is still bad business, and the little guy (but not the kid) is the hero. Lots of stuff goes on here, but it's easy enough to keep track of the characters as they are each unique. Don't read another 'futurist dystopian fantasy' novel until you've finished this series. This is going to be the standard by which to measure the rest.

Historia
Mary and Eddie are meant for each other - but love is no guarantee, not in these suburbs. Like all children, they exist in an eternal present; time is imminent, and the adults of the street live in their assorted houses like numbers on a clock. Meanwhile, ominous rumors circulate, and the increasing agitation of the neighbors points to a future in which all will be lost. Soon a sorcerer's car will speed down Mary's street, and as past and future fold into each other, the resonant parenthesis of her girlhood will close forever. Beyond is adulthood.

Totally Lost Me
Revisado: 10-28-23
It was a lot of work to figure out the point of all this rambling. If there wasn't suggestive sex throughout, the plot might be suitable for elementary school kids. The narrator had the same breathless quality for each of the characters. After four hours of listening, I declined to finish the last two. There are too many good books waiting for my listening pleasure.
