Historia
After carving a free state for itself in war-torn 17th century Europe, citizens of the modern town of Grantville, West Virginia, contend with aristocratic forces determined to keep their grip on power whatever it takes. When Grantville, West Virginia, was transported back to the year 1631 - in the middle of the Thirty Years' War, no less - many things happened.

Great addition to the collection
Revisado: 01-29-25
The Austrian government has been the antagonist for most of the series thus far, the HRE representing the ogre of fanatical Catholicism. Now we see how a change in the leadership and a change in policy can BEGIN to shift attitudes and positions in positive directions. But, we also see how resistant people in general are to rapid change. The “up-timers” are no welcomed by cheering throngs as liberators, and technology is not the great equalizer of society as so many less-informed authors of time travel novels seem to think it is.
If you are looking for military actions and battles, skip this book, you will get the gist of the events from other works.
If you are a fan of social change, cultural psychology, and court intrigue, this is the book for you! Either way, a fantastic addition to the Ring Of Fire series!

Historia
On Periremunda, the populace are rioting. With local forces unable to contain the widespread civil disorder, Commissar Cain and his regiment of Valhallans are called in to help. However, it seems there is more to the rebellion than first appeared, and Cain suspects sinister forces at work behind the scenes. When the commissar is reunited with Inquisitor Amberley Vail, it seems his fears are realised. In this the fifth book in the popular Ciaphas Cain series, our hero is thrown into a deadly conspiracy that even he might not be able to emerge from alive.

My favorite of the Cain series: quintessential Imperial Guard humor mixed with action, and the appropriate amount of seriousness as behooves the grimdark setting

Historia
Two short novels set in Eric Flint's best-selling Ring of Fire series from David Carrico, coauthor of 1636: The Devil's Opera. Due to a temporal disturbance known as the Ring of Fire, the 20th-century town of Grantville, West Virginia, finds itself transported through time and space to Central Europe in the year 1632. The turmoil resulting from the event has massive repercussions for the up-time citizens of Grantville, the down-time citizens of Europe - and the world at large. Massive political and social upheavals take place. But change happens on a smaller, human scale, too.

Beautiful human stories in a world of massive political turmoil.
Revisado: 11-25-24
The 1632 universe is an opus of political science and essentially the story of the clash of ideas, as well as technology. But this book shows those same ideas clashing in the minds of ordinary people, not kings or emperors. That’s what makes this particular story so compelling and powerful

Fantastic work, with Cain puttering around with his usual shenanigans, and Sandy doing the usual incredible job of making the character look simultaneously heroic and ridiculous. 10/10, five stars, and all the other accolades I can give them!

A tangled web to ensnare the delighted reader
Revisado: 06-02-24
At first it seems to be a delightful but random conglomeration of stories in the Ring of Fire, involving farmers and sheep. And then before you know it, it has spiraled into international politics in the best way possible.
The narrator is equally at ease with WV hillbilly accents and cultured Europeans. 5/5 stars

Out of options, Ufthak leads his Waaagh! through the mysterious webway, to a place where kunnin’, sneakin’, and thinkin’ are the name of the game. A place with little truck for muscle and brawn – Commorragh, the Dark City. Here, where kabals and haemonculus covens pump psychic viscera into the warp, Ufthak is thrown into gladiatorial combat and soon finds himself up against an archon who will stop at nothing to prove she deserves to rule the Dark City – even if it means bringing Commorragh down around her.

The narrator has the Ork characters perfectly, but struggles at the Aeldar segments. But still, 9 out of 10 stars.

An amazing meeting between two Legends
Revisado: 04-11-24
Two contemporaries of the Emperor who can talk of science and history but neither of whom are true believers in their respective faiths…But each one hates the other's position so much to not help the other.*Chef’s Kiss
Most Mechanicus books are too encumbered with techno-babble that encumbers the casual reader, or drags from otherwise action-packed stories.
THIS book perfectly balances the two, going back and forth between Bile’s Chaos and Cawl’s Mechanicus factions to where each section of the book complements the other.
