Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

Insensitive and unrealistic
Revisado: 10-20-19
I like Lisa Gardner a lot. I’ve probably read all her books and enjoyed them. This book is just plain dumb. I’m nearly done and just not sure I can finish it. The main character is an abused woman who has only had sex with her abuser husband. Violent and abusive sex. In one week, she is having orgasmic sex with a very messed up man who is supposed to be helping her. She’s telling him she loves him. She’s already told him she doesn’t know any type of sex except what she’s had with her husband. Now, this story is not about her sex life. The story is not well developed. It is filled with gratuitous sex scenes. I do not hate sex in a book. I just want a decent story. Her characters are not developed in this story. They have no dimensions. In addition to that, it is disrespectful to abused people. It minimizes the affect of abuse and evil on a human. I can’t believe she wrote this insensitive book.

Historia
On its surface, life in Houston in the 1950s is as you'd expect: stoic fathers, restless teens, drive-in movies, and souped-up Cadillacs. But underneath lies a world shifting under high school junior Aaron Broussard's feet. There's a class war between the "haves" and the "have-nots" as well as a real war, Korea, happening on the other side of the world. It is against this backdrop that Aaron comes of age, trying to understand how first loves, friendship, violence, and power can alter what "traditional America" means for the people trying to find their way in a changing world.

I read this out of order
Revisado: 02-26-19
I didn't find this book the least bit believable. I don't think a 17 year old in the '50s would have those experiences. I don't think they would have been given those freedoms. I struggled to finish this book. I usually love Burke. This time, not so much. Could the fact that I read the book out of order (this was book was #3, which I read first) had an impact? Maybe. I'm going to start back on #1 but admit that I'm dreading it. Will Patton was wonderful as usual. Early on, his very recognizable voice was distracting, but as he developed the characters I stopped listening to him and started listening to the characters.

Revisado: 02-21-19
I read/listen a lot. Over the years, eventually, I’ve tired of some of my favorite writer’s styles. I never tire of Tami Hoag. Her books are never formulaic. Her characters are well developed. She leaves no loose ends. She’s one of my all time favorites. This is a great book. I couldn’t put it down. The performance was excellent also.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Well recorded with variety of voices and sound effects. The performances were great. I found that I wasn’t interested in the subjects. It was drawn out. If you are a Victorian period history buff, you would probably like it.

What's the point?
Revisado: 02-09-19
I loved John Grisham up to this point. This is the worst of his books, in my opinion. This is really three different books. The first was okay if somewhat too descriptive. The second was grueling and enlightening to the point that I have to read more about the subject. The third was awful. Not because it didn't end the way I would have liked, but because the entire point of the book was not revealed until the last few lines. It did not fit the lengthy book or deserve the waste of so many hours listening to it. I understand it must be kept in mind the period of time in which it took place and the area of the country. I understand that it could have happened (and probably has). I just thought it was the construction of the story and how it was told. Michael Beck's performance was okay but not outstanding. This could also be colored by the fact that I didn't enjoy the story.

You’ve heard of an Essex Girl or even a Chelsea Girl, but what about a Hounslow Girl? Definition of a Hounslow Girl: a young Muslim woman who wears hooped earrings with her headscarf and grapples with traditional values while hustling her way through urban London. The Diary of a Hounslow Girl is a bold and provocative one-person play, written and performed by Ambreen Razia. From the joys of traditional Pakistani weddings to fights on the night bus, this is a comic story of dreams, aspirations and coming of age, told through the eyes of a 16-year-old British Muslim girl.
