Great storytelling
Revisado: 07-07-24
For the most part the characters were well written and engaging. The last few chapters didn’t hold up as well but overall it was a good listen.

It was hard to follow and the story itself was not particularly interesting. The rationale behind some behaviors was never made clear and the ending was disappointing.

OK but not particularly unique

This was an interesting little story but fairly predictable. The characters could have been developed more fully.

Historia
The extraordinary life of history's first modern lesbian who inspired the television series Gentleman Jack. Anne Lister's journals were so shocking that the first person to crack their secret code hid them behind a fake panel in his ancestral home. Anne Lister was a Regency landowner, an intrepid world traveller...and an unabashed lover of other women. In this bold new biography, prizewinning author Angela Steidele uses the diaries to create a portrait of Anne Lister as we've never seen her before: a woman in some ways very much of her time and in others far ahead of it.

Interesting but not overly engaging
Revisado: 05-14-24
I admit up font that I prefer fiction and don’t read a lot of biographical work, so my expectation of a story with plot was not well founded. This is a well researched description of a lesbian woman in a period where women had few rights. It contained details and explanations of the customs and laws at the time which were very helpful. The main character managed to have many lovers and somehow keep most of them as close friends and allies while being at the root a rather despicable human.

A bit improbable
Revisado: 05-14-24
It was set in an interesting time in Boston history and the author pulls no punches in describing the fear and loathing between the races as mandatory bussing was enforced. The Irish gangs of Southie were an ominous presence in daily life and both protected and crushed their communities. But, the main storyline depicted a middle aged, somewhat drunken woman pulling off ambitious physical and logistical feats that just didn’t ring true.

Too predictable
Revisado: 04-19-24
The layout of the book made it too easy to see how these two narratives would arc and come back together. It was well written but not spectacular. The life of the main character Norma felt flat. All in all not a bad read but not something I would recommend to a friend.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Love that an octopus is a main character
Revisado: 09-18-23
I decided to listen to this one simply because it had an octopus as a main character. Some of it is a little far-fetched, but in all honesty, it’s hard to say what is reasonable for a character with eight arms. I liked the characters and the story moved along at a good pace. The book left me with a smile on my face and for me, that’s the sign of a good story.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Started off OK
Revisado: 09-18-23
At the outset there was an interesting but unexplained circumstance around the protagonist which caught my interest. About 2/3 of the way into the story the narrative took a ridiculous and bizarre twist. After that, circumstances kept getting stranger, and the author had a hard time wrangling all the side stories into a comprehensive narrative. By the end, it all felt rather silly, and I was glad to be done with the book.

Torture is not my thing
Revisado: 08-11-23
I’m not far enough into the book to rate the story but I won’t be finishing it. I don’t enjoy prolonged descriptions of torture and if this is how the story starts, it’s probably not going to be my thing.

The art world is a much dirtier, nastier business than you might expect. Tony Tetro, one of the most renowned art forgers in history, will make you question every masterpiece you’ve ever seen in a museum, gallery, or private collection. Tetro’s “Rembrandts,” “Caravaggios,” “Miros,” and hundreds of other works now hang on walls around the globe.

The man is a professional con
Revisado: 07-11-23
Tony makes himself out to be a nice guy with ethical standards, but I kept thinking, this guy is a professional con man. How much of this is true? I’ve had the opportunity to meet charming sociopaths in life and Tony is right in there. He bought fancy cars for himself instead of taking care of his daughter. He was broke but never thought to get a job. He used the lame teenage excuse that everyone was in on the action to justify his behavior. He is just another self indulgent jet set wannabe who had to lie and cheat his way to a wealthy lifestyle. Interesting but not compelling.
