Psychology of criminal messy
Revisado: 02-19-24
Just as there were too many and improbable finds by the PI and his team, the diagnostics of his prey conveniently changed to fit the plot line. With better editing this could have been a good book

Be prepared for a puzzle
Revisado: 10-28-20
The mystery is a fine and socially aware puzzle, but the heavy Glaswegian accent for some of the characters is a puzzle too far. It requires concentration to understand and even at that I sensed I was missing some of the story. I suggest you rest the book

Splendid narration. One of the best books in the series
Revisado: 02-05-18
Department Q can get too silly and self involved, but in this book there is a successful knitting of several narratives. The characters as always are well drawn and underlying themes are prods to things we would rather ignore or forget. Definitely recommend the book but you’d best read the series in order as there are evolving personal stories

Twists, turns, surprises against a background that includes Monty Python?
Revisado: 01-21-18
This is not a book for everyone. If you will be turned off by computer games, the future setting, the tongue in cheek allusions to the 80s, then read another book. I was alternately laughing and turning off the audiobook because I was too anxious. I was very sorry to finish it

Eerie and too close to potentially true
Revisado: 11-14-17
Within the structure of the single warrior of justice against a cabal of well connected evil doers, this book actually works. It seems credible and awful , just slightly removed from what we accept as everyday reality. The plotting moves along without drag, and the vocabulary and descriptions are well beyond the average page turner

ISIS has detonated a massive bomb in the Marais district of Paris, and a desperate French government wants Gabriel to eliminate the man responsible before he can strike again.

Fine idea but gets tedious
Revisado: 07-10-17
The author is quite taken with his characters but in an audio book, descriptions that one flies over when reading do bog down the narrative. Should have been abridged

Solo is a former cop who ran away from a dark past in France to start his life over again in Bamako, Mali, as a PI. An ordinary case turns out to be not so ordinary. The drug mule gets her throat slit. The French lawyer is too beautiful and too well informed. The cocaine is too plentiful. This is hard-boiled noir with a modern twist set in West Africa.

A guy's story with sex and gore, but...
Revisado: 03-08-17
The narration is excellent and I learned a lot about Mali that I previously would have been hard pressed to identify on a map. The main character is likable and sustains a story that otherwise would have been irritating with its deus ex machine twists

A police procedural with creepy and religious sect overtones, this is a compulsive listen. The child caring and kind interpersonal values offer a redeeming contrast to evil doers. Some slick plot twists and good character development sustain the story

Historia
When a murder rocks the isolated community of Entry Island, insomniac homicide detective Sime Mackenzie boards a light aircraft at St. Hubert airfield bound for the small, scattered chain of Madeline Islands, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, as part of an eight-officer investigation team from Montréal. Only two kilometers wide and three long, Entry Island is home to a population of just more than 100 inhabitants, the wealthiest of whom has just been discovered murdered in his home.

Great narration - fortunately
Revisado: 05-05-16
Where does Entry Island rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
While a compelling listen, the dual story line gets tedious as the historic, remote story is more romance than mystery. The audio is saved by Forbes who does three separate accents and helps the listener keep track of the respective stories.
Have you listened to any of Peter Forbes’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I will certainly look for other books narrated by Forbes.
Any additional comments?
The historical background of the enclosures in Scotland and settling of 19C Canada are very well done and I learned quite a bit. The descriptions of the Hebrides and the Magdelaine Islands made me put those places on my travel list as places I might like to visit.

Narrator's Plummy British Accent does't work here
Revisado: 12-23-15
Would you try another book from Kristina Ohlsson and/or Justine Eyre?
The Kristina Ohlsson books are thrilling enough to keep my interest while in transit; this narration was abysmal as the attempt at a Swedish accent was a failure and all the male characters - American and Swede - sounded oddly the same. I had difficulty finishing this book because of the narrator who should stick to British romance novels.
What did you like best about this story?
The premise of the story was believable and the characters were well developed
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Justine Eyre?
ANYONE
Did Hostage inspire you to do anything?
Besides complain about the narrator - no
