This book has some serious eyeroll worthy ines for no apparent reason. It’s like the author is trying to be funny with phrases/metaphors but it comes off as corny, made worse by the narrator’s overly emphasized, laughing-but-not-laughing voice. Perfect example, “if you made it this far, you probably feel like an anaconda who swallowed a warthog- it’s a LOT to digest”. I cringed. So, so bad.

Just wasn’t for me

Not bad but not my taste. I found this title on a subreddit when looking for horror literature, but I don’t think this is really horror- more of a psychological thriller. Excellent narration, though.

Overall good information but

Sometimes the author went way too far with the personal anecdotes, even naming an ex girlfriend who cheated on her with a mutual friend. Also that her sister shared something told in confidence with family members. This book has helpful information and practices but I can’t help but wonder if the author was being petty in the name of “healing” as a means to humiliate people who hurt her.

Found it difficult to stay interested in

For some reason I found it difficult to stay engaged. It’s a well written book but the timeline jumps around too much from past to present. However, it does not take away from the horror of what happened to the Clutters. The crime is one of the worst imaginable for those with a family. They did not deserve that kind of brutality… may their souls rest peacefully.

Not my usual genre but I absolutely loved it!

Ironically, I ended up visiting Savannah for the first time when I was halfway through the book. I went to my first drag show at Club One, where the real Lady Chablis danced for many years. It was so cool to see the streets and places described in the book. Would absolutely recommend this to a friend.

A little corny at times but sage advice

I will be using what I learned moving forward, but the reading was a bit corny at times, like he was trying to land a punchline that just didn’t stick.

Narrator doesn’t have to try speaking like a man

Someone please pass it along to the woman who read this that you do not have to do a fake man voice just to read a male part. It was so corny and distracting I actually laughed the first time, then spent the rest of the time annoyed. The story was okay but after good finishing People Who Eat Darkness, this was just “meh” for me.
