Historia
An Italian village on a hilltop near the Adriatic coast, a decaying palazzo facing the sea, and in the basement, cobwebbed and dusty, lit by a single bulb, an archive unknown to scholars. Here, a young graduate student from Rome, Francesca Cappelletti, makes a discovery that inspires a search for a work of art of incalculable value, a painting lost for almost two centuries.

Discovery
Revisado: 04-13-25
An engaging narrative of the hunt for a missing Caravaggio painting. An actual discovery, which was captivating to read about, but the many details of clothing and people's lives the author used were distracting and unnecessary.

Historia
When ten-year-old Ebby Freeman heard the gunshot, time stopped. And when she saw her brother, Baz, lying on the floor surrounded by the shattered pieces of a centuries-old jar, life as Ebby knew it shattered as well. The crime was never solved—and because the Freemans were one of the only Black families in a particularly well-to-do enclave of New England—the case has had an enduring, voyeuristic pull for the public. The last thing the Freemans want is another media frenzy splashing their family across the papers, but when Ebby's high profile romance falls apart, that's exactly what they get.

She begins to feel good, dazzling in fact, and she soon spirals high into a wild and terrifying mania that culminates in a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Cheers for Maddy
Revisado: 03-03-25
Author, Lisa Genova, has once again raised awareness about a health situation that is extremely difficult to live with in this fictional account of a young woman with bi-polar disorder. It was heart-wrenching to read about Maddy's struggles to come to terms with her disorder.

The Frankie character was full of clichés, which got a little tiresome, but it was an intriguing story. Could have been shorter, a bit repetitive.

Historia
Mrs. Post, the President and First Lady are here to see you. . . . So begins another average evening for Marjorie Merriweather Post. Presidents have come and gone, but she has hosted them all. Growing up in the modest farmlands of Battle Creek, Michigan, Marjorie was inspired by a few simple rules: always think for yourself, never take success for granted, and work hard—even when deemed American royalty, even while covered in imperial diamonds.

Historia
Lions is set on the High Plains of Colorado, a nearly deserted place steeped in local legends and sparse in population. Built to be a glorious Western "city upon a hill", it was never fit for farming, mining, trading, or any of the illusory sources of wealth its pioneers imagined. The Walkers have been settled on its barren terrain for generations - a simple family in a town otherwise still taken in by stories of bigger, better, brighter.

August 2020. Sophia, a young playwright, awaits her father’s verdict on her new show. A famous author whose novels haven’t aged as gracefully into the modern era as he might have hoped, he is completely unaware that the play centers around a vacation the two took years earlier to an island off Sicily, where he dictated to her a new book. Sophia’s play has been met with rave reviews, but her father has studiously avoided reading any of them.

Historia
After meeting for the first time on the front lines of World War I, two aspiring writers forge an intense 20-year friendship and write some of America's greatest novels, giving voice to a "lost generation" shaken by war. Eager to find his way in life and words, John Dos Passos first witnessed the horror of trench warfare in France as a volunteer ambulance driver retrieving the dead and seriously wounded from the front line. Later in the war, he briefly met another young writer, Ernest Hemingway, who was just arriving for his service in the ambulance corps.

Revisado: 11-08-24
After telling myself I would not read any more books about Ernest Hemingway, I listened to this one. It focused on the relationship between Dos Passos and Hemingway after they met during WWI, as competing authors and peripherally their other friends and authors.
