Raymond Chandler's writing is really great. The style of writing kept me mesmerized and the characters were well drawn. However (and I found this out later) he cobbled together three previously written stories into one novel. Therein lies the problem: while the writing is great, the different parts don't mesh well together. It reallys sounds like you are hearing three different stories and it is a bit convoluted. Chandler even admitted he cared more about the style oof writing than the story: "my whole career is based on the idea that the formula doesn't matter, the thing that counts is what you do with the formula; that is to say, it is a matter of style." Scott Brick's narration is, as always, great. If you want to hear great writing and are not overly concerned about plot points, you will like it.

I was so looking forward to listening to this audio version because I loved the book. I started listening and the names were changed and I could not understand. That is until I read the reviews of other people who were disappointed. While the story is good, it is NOT what I was looking for and Audible does NOT make it clear that this is really the original 1958 story and not the 1986 novel. If you are looking for the unabridged 1986 novel, this isn't it.
