At nine, Sean Connery saved him from drowning. At thirteen, desperate to hook up with Janis Joplin, he attended his aunt Joan Didion and uncle John Gregory Dunne’s legendary LA launch party for Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. At sixteen, he got kicked out of boarding school, ending his institutional education for good.

Highly recommended, particularly if, like me, you lived through this period and knew some of the principal characters. An intimate family saga of joy and sadness, of success and tragedy, of blame and forgiveness. Griffin does a beautiful job of bringing both the humor and the pathos to the reading. Look forward to the next volume.

Historia
From its debut in 1962, Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was a wild success and a cultural lightning rod. The play transpires over one long, boozy night, laying bare the lies, compromises, and scalding love that have sustained a middle-aged couple through decades of marriage. It scandalized critics but magnetized audiences. Across 644 sold-out Broadway performances, the drama demolished the wall between what could and couldn’t be said on the American stage and marked a definitive end to the I Love Lucy 1950s.

Well researched, well written, well read, but...
Revisado: 03-26-24
...so many errors, both in the writing and in the reading. For example, THE LION IN WINTER was not written by William Goldman but by his brother James Goldman. Lots of bad pronunciation - who is James Aggie? And so on...Does anyone ever "proof read" audio books???

Brilliant but troubled, James gave Carlisle an education in all that he held dear in life—literature, music, and, most of all, dance.

Just awful
Revisado: 06-18-22
Couldn't get through this. The premise is so unbelievable - though maybe it redeemed itself at the end. I couldn't be bothered to wade through it to find out. Mostly, though, I couldn't stand the first reader's voice: whiny, fake accent (from where???) and numerous mispronunciations.

Historia
Human Smoke delivers an indictment of the treasured myths that have romanticized much of the 1930s and '40s. Incorporating meticulous research and well-documented sources---including newspaper and magazine articles, radio speeches, memoirs, and diaries---the book juxtaposes hundreds of interrelated moments of decision, brutality, suffering, and mercy. Vivid glimpses of political leaders and their dissenters illuminate the gradual, horrifying advance toward overt global war and Holocaust.

Powerful and incredibly moving
Revisado: 02-02-22
One of the best approaches to World War II I have read. Thoroughly researched and beautifully written, it is a scary investigation of the genesis and pursuance of World War II.
One comment re the narration: Why don't producers and readers thoroughly research the pronunciation of proper names, particularly in a work such as this? For instance:
Duncan Sandys - correct pronunciation: Sands.
Lord Cadogan - correct pronunciation: Ca - duggan.

Ruined by the reader
Revisado: 02-24-20
This is a terrific book, "factual fiction", a gripping story well told, if a little long. However, the whole experience was ruined for me by the absolutely awful reader, who seems unable to complete even the shortest sentence without drawing a new breath between two or three words. She sounds as if she's running a 10K race while reading the book. If I had the time, I would re-read the book in hard copy just to get this dreadful voice out of my mind.

Mr. Le Carre can do no wrong, especially when he reads his own work in a rich, plummy voice which perfectly mirrors the character he is portraying.

Historia
Duncan Peck has a fascination for randomness and is always taking his family on the move. His wife, Justine, is a fortune teller who can't remember the past. Her grandfather, Daniel, longs to find the brother who walked out of his life in 1912, with nothing more than a fiddle in his hand. All three are taking journeys that lead back to the family's deepest roots... to a place where rebellion and acceptance have the haunting power to merge into one.

Beautiful book, terrible reader
Revisado: 01-07-20
This is one of the most boring, soulless "listens" I've experienced in a long time. The reader uses a one-note tone which completely deadens the drama in the book. No characterization, no emotion, just a droning on and on of this beautiful text. Ann Tyler is a brilliant writer who never fails to move me - except in this instance, where she has been severely under-served by a reader who seems to want nothing more than simply to get to the end of the book.

Moss Hart's Act One, which Lincoln Center Theater presented in 2014 as a play written and directed by James Lapine, is one of the greatest American memoirs - a glorious memorial to a bygone age filled with all the wonder, drama, and heartbreak that surrounded Broadway in the early 20th century.

One of the finest theatre autobiographies ever written. Beautifully read - with the exception of Bow Bells, which is pronounced Boe Bells, not Bough Bells. Don't producers ever check these things? Oh well. it's still a great book.

At once a murder mystery, a moving love story, and a riveting portrait of a unique time and place - Berlin, July 1945 - The Good German is a historical thriller of the first rank. The New York Times calls it "thoroughly captivating, a novel that brings to life the ambiguities at the heart of our country's moral legacy."
