Historia
It's 1952, and Jasper isn't allowed to ask questions or make a fuss. He's lucky to even have a home and must keep his mouth shut and his ears open to stay in his uncle's good graces. No one knows where his mother went or whether she's coming back. Desperate to see her again, he must take matters into his own hands. From the farm, he embarks on a treacherous search that will take him to the squalid hideaways of Detroit and back again, through tawdry taverns, peep shows, and gambling houses.

RIVETING.
Revisado: 09-30-18
After reading the reviews I decided to purchase this title but the same reviews held my impulse to read it at bay as they warned of its misery and the gut wrenching experiences young Jasper went through. Did the first 2 chapters late at night and the 3rd whilst making the bed the next morning. By then I was totally hooked. What makes it bearable is the hope and kindness shown in little green shoots like seed growing in gravel. Don’t miss this one. Brilliant reading of a story of truth.

Historia
A tense, gripping psychological thriller, with Hitchcockian overtones, perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, Sophie Hannah and Rosamund Lupton. Lara Finch is living a lie. Everyone thinks she has a happy life in Cornwall, married to the devoted Sam, but in fact she is desperately bored. When she is offered a new job that involves commuting to London by sleeper train, she meets Guy and starts an illicit affair. But then Lara vanishes from the night train without a trace.

Brilliant reading of a very well constructed story - compelling character profiles. Thought I would just dip in and out of it as a background ‘noise’ whilst working on other projects but it was far too compelling.

Historia
Court Gentry is known as The Gray Man—a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible, and then fading away. And he always hits his target. But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness. Now, he is going to prove that for him, there's no gray area between killing for a living-and killing to stay alive.

ADDICTIVE - COMPELLING.
Revisado: 09-14-18
Greaney’s mastery in character and plot twists driven not just by the potential for theatre but by very human factors is maximized by Snyder’s mastery in voice and pacing.
A team who deliver an edge of the seat story which brilliantly sketches in the visual with an attention to detail that results in a feeling of not just being there but coming away having learnt a lot!
Bettter than Bond and in the style of The Bourne Ultimatum etc but I enjoyed the audio more as I don’t have to sit still staring at a screen. Whilst I can keep moving, my mind is racing with the story.

PLOT LOST in DETAIL.
Revisado: 09-10-18
This story was bought for its accolades which suggests a strength beyond the publisher’s endorsement. I’m guessing the prize won was given by the representatives of the (tribes)people featured. Certainly the social and cultural detailing of the Alaskan native Indians is so well featured that one forgets there is a story rapidly losing momentum as the reader gets bogged in the social profiling of a commmunity.
Disappointing overall despite the strength of the writer’s knowledge of the community.

Revisado: 08-18-18
The schmalzy tale of a mutual rescue told without schmalz. Beautifully delivered in character appropriate voices in a story told without affectation. This has been written with a keen eye for the truth in detail and with compassion for all participants.
One to keep.

Surprisingly addictive.
Revisado: 04-07-17
Bought on the recommendation by a colleague, the story opens on the tone of a teenage novel, built on the emotional perspective of rebellion, self- interest and random choice. I prepared myself for disappointment. When the key protagonist Marguerite sweeps past the potential for the level of detail I hugely enjoyed in The Martian with a 'I won't bore you with all the scientific mumbo jumbo' dismissal, I dropped further into the potential crevasse of Barbara Cartland meets wannabe high school writer.
I stuck with it though, listening to all 3 books in the series. There is enough repetition in the stories to lose a star - constantly referencing an earlier event to explain a current. And a better writer would have added detail not revealed in the earlier script to further the 3D credibility of Marguerite - narrator. Real people remember detail later to the event. Trying to set each novel up as a standalone costs the momentum and causes the main character to suddenly reduce to just an invention at the pen of the writer. Tiresome.
However, the series rates 4 stars for the onion like peeling in the development of the main character's awareness and the resolution of a fun story to a very satisfying ending all round. No loose threads but not too neat. Tavia Gilbert does it justice in her range of voices. Well worth the time!

I was warned about Tristan Cole. "Stay away from him," people said. "He's cruel." "He's cold." "He's damaged." It's easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster. But I couldn't do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him, because it also lived inside of me.

2 Dimensional / Overworked
Revisado: 01-22-17
This was a freebie and even then the currency of time to listen was too high. For the occasional (once every 5 - 6 chapters), well crafted observation of insight into human need there's an avalanche of overworked phrasing and heavy panting that challenges one to indeed find air. It's a labour of discipline to finish the text. I wonder if the good writing within this is the gift of a kind editor to the author? This is Days of Our Lives written by a love sick 14 year old. The female narrator did a competent job but the male counterpart read as if he were acting in a porn movie.

Riveted from beginning to end and Keeble's reading was faultless. The range of character voices and intonation, his use of speed and spacing in reading the dialogue gave it great dramatic effect.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Astonishing!
Revisado: 11-12-16
This was my 2nd audible book. The 1st was a story written in the 20's of a governess. That was over 3 years ago and I didn't gallop to repeat the experience but just resumed reading online or in the flesh again. I like to learn and heard The Martian had good science behind it. The science was strong, but the drama in the writing and the choice of Weir as reader was utterly compelling. There were many times towards the end as tension grew I just had to stop so as to process the progression of the tale and to allow myself to catch up. At chapter 22 I sent it to a friend as a freeby just to be sure he begins. That's all that you need to do to know that you'll be with the crew until the end. Now I will let myself see the film and desperately hope Hollywood has done the writer and reader justice!
