This is my first review of a Brandon Sanderson novel, despite him being my favorite contemporary author (and that's saying something, because I Iove a lot of authors), but his Stormlight Archive masterpiece has kept me too in a state of awe to even attempt reviewing any of his books. This wee book probably has received less shock and awe than most of Sanderson's works, but I can almost prophesy (and I'm not a prophet, so this is me just, well, gushing) that if we can squeeze another 100 years out of this world, "The Rithmatist" will sit on shelves next to Peter Pan, The Hobbit, the Oz books, Pooh, Narnia, Harry Potter, and the very best of Roald Dahl (and no, that's not hyperbole, none of it). This book is so concise, so tailored, and so blooming RIPE with rich characters (with no extraneous), heart-pounding action, an imaginative magic spin on mathematics that can almost make ME take interest in math, and a barely visible HUGE world twirling and spinning about this little story, that I'd almost have to call it a 99% perfect novel; seriously, the only downside is that this book should have been three times as large (that's what we all desire, us lovers of literature). The label "Classic" should be slapped on the front cover. Because this is timeless—the story, plot, characters, novelty, and the enchantment of "children growing up and grasping at understanding the world around them") and I think it will prove more popular with every year that passes. The relationship between Joel and Melody is wonderful, how often do you get a nice depiction of a boy and a girl developing a real and deep friendship without straying into "Twilight" zones? As an Audible book, Michael Kramer reads it perfectly, he always has a knack for subtly pulling nuances with his voice, and consistently with characters, really making the world come alive. This is the third time I've read this book (I read all my great favorites over and over), and so I felt I should finally, well, SAY something about it (my 14-year-old daughter is reading it right now and she loves it as much as she loves Kaladin, and that's quite an oath in itself!) (unfortunately, she is going to be hugely disappointed when she realizes that a second book does not as yet exist in the Year of our Lord 2023). I could say this little story is exquisite, well that's the descriptor I started this with, and it's not exaggeration, but this imaginative explosion of ideas (those chalklings are WEIRD, what a concept) can realistically be defined as...AWESOME. Shock and awe, baby, shock and awe, truly awesome. Make diggeth upon it, thou Dude! Art et Amour Toujours

Get past the acting, well some of it is good, but the story really gets...AWESOME along about Chapters 8 and 9. I couldn't stop listening to it at that point, and I was hoping it was going to go on another 8 hours or so, but it kept me going and flowing with ideas, so very good from two of my favorite authors (Netflix, you listening?). Comparable to the best of any Twilight Zone episode, or Black Mirror. Art et Amour Toujours

Perhaps not an autobiography, but all the autobiographical stuff herein is pretty good, pretty eye-opening. Hopefully, this is just Part 1, and Justine Bateman comes back with more. Art et Amour Toujours

High marks for the second book in the series, Kirrin is a humorist and a mental-gen (smartly funny), and the predicaments Ned gets in are riveting, and the escapes and victories are always hard-won, and never seem too gamey. Still, in two books, there has hardly been a spark of any kind of attraction between any of the characters (and that would be a massively huge part of any world you were choosing to live in), well, except there is a lot of Frank attraction, which never quite goes too over the top, and Frank is still a delight (I thought his attitude might get old, but it hasn't, close, but not yet). By far this is the best RPGLit I've come across, and is keeping me grafted on, even toward the third book. Art et Amour Toujours

Pretty good stuff here, doesn't go too overboard on posting all the stats and game mechanics, and thankfully the narrator protagonist isn't an utter jerk (like most LitRPGs), but it's okay that Frank is ever present (he fills that role, but humorously, and sometimes he quite hilarious). I've started so many of these types of books and had to hang it up, as my eyes get so tired of rolling, but this story proves immersive, and the action is intense (as opposed to endlessly grinding to make gold or points). Really the only downside is Kirrin doesn't address some of the primary needs of people in general, and game players especially, but all in all I really did enjoy the entire book, it just flew by, and I was crestfallen when it ended (so I immediately just picked up Book Two!). One last point, this is some pretty good writing (nice surprise, there). Art et Amour Toujours

It's different, this story, this style of telling this story, and listening can cause creases between your eyebrows (might be permanent, we'll see), but what we have here is a terrific take on "demons" and "angels" and how a cosmic island stocked with wild goats (people) can really provide a tasty to hungry and high-tech visitors. The pieces of the story ain't bad, but the whole of the story is...superb, terrifying, and creepily satisfying. I've read quite a few Jeremy Robinson novels and never made the connection that I was accumulating a collection of treasured stories by the same author, each is THAT different. Keep going, Jeremy, what a weirdly beautiful and twisted collection of noodles in that coconut. Art et Amour Toujours

Wow, and I don't exaggerate that beginning, because I have a new living author to read, and this was one of the best starts to a series I've ever set out upon. Abercrombie has a way with words, clever and sarcastic, and almost entirely grim. It's like gathering together the very worst characters from Game of Thrones and allowing them to cut loose. I mean, I think everyone in the book is despicable, but entirely engrossing. I hate to say it, but I LOVE them, all of them. If you feel bereft because the next Stormlight Archive is years in the distance, (oh but YE-ARGH-OBITE!), I am delighted to say I might end up liking Abercrombie as much as I adore Sanderson. I loved this book (the truth is, my first reading I only got to Chapter 5, then had to set it aside, because I didn't know what I was reading). A month later, started again, and finally understood everyone, and without exaggeration, I am thrilled. Hey Mikey, you'll LOVE it, because Great Stuff, Maynard. Sing praises, I have discovered a new author. On to the next! Art et Amour Toujours

The first two books were about as good as "creepy" gets, and each one provides plenty of room for growth for the main guy, and even though this third book goes completely over the top in its resolution, let me tell you, it is good, even haunting. Great writing, and a terrific handling of a difficult plot, with plenty of scares, and some very sad turns. Dan Wells packs a whole lot of SUPER in the supernatural. Art et Amour Toujours

The first book "I am not a serial killer" was good, but in this book "Mr. Monster" both the writing intensifies and perfects, and John Wayne Cleaver the character comes into his own, and we start to get a handle on him, and possibly (gasp) actually begin to LIKE him. He's a guy, a dude, a teenager pretty much like any other kid, except that today he would probably be labeled as "on the spectrum" (and this is the best depiction in fiction I've ever come across of ASD, bar none). But aside from John, everything else is wonderfully creepy and downright scary, as we are allowed to visit a place much scarier than any gruesome imagining of Dracula's lair. The basement and the pit will give you nightmares, all the while you get to learn all about love and what it actually is! Not a bad deal. I haven't read the third book yet but have it in my library, and figure John will grow and develop even as Dan Well's genius creative expression expands, so I'm hooked, this is good stuff Maynard, good stuff.
