Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life. He still does the odd bit of investigation work, but he prefers his familiar routines: the pub quiz, his favorite bench, his cat waiting for him at home. His days of adventure are over. Adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amy’s job now. Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul. Working in private security, every day is dangerous. She’s currently on a remote island protecting mega-bestselling author Rosie D’Antonio, until a dead body and a bag of money mean trouble in paradise. Historia
It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Lots of killing and complexity
Revisado: 07-10-24
Well, there is a rather a lot of killing, short-sighted political posturing, and violence in general in this story. Complex world building, time is flexible, and generally it seems mostly men in charge/engaged similar to our own world. Characters are thinly but I suppose, sufficiently colored in. My overall impression was of a world or worlds that aren’t particularly desirable to live in. I detest it when characters are drawn with selfish grief that is so deep they can destroy everything, it’s just not believable and totally ruins the view of them having ever been people who truly loved and learned from it. Nevertheless, it is often difficult to find fantasy of this type and so if you’re in the mood for an involved, complex story this one is well written and intriguing.

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Complex and intriguing
Revisado: 06-29-24
Really enjoyed the twists and turns of this story. Complex world and relationships, so much political intrigue-layers and layers. Not a lot of characters to root for but the few you can really pull on you.

Historia
The Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers, one of the most respected organizations throughout all of England, has long been tasked with maintaining magic within His Majesty's lands. But lately the once proper institute has fallen into disgrace, naming an altogether unsuitable gentleman - a freed slave who doesn't even have a familiar - as their Sorcerer Royal and allowing England's once profuse stores of magic to slowly bleed dry. At least they haven't stooped so low as to allow women to practice....

Historia
In Daretana’s greatest mansion, a high imperial officer lies dead—killed, to all appearances, when a tree erupted from his body. Even here at the Empire’s borders, where contagions abound and the blood of the leviathans works strange magical changes, it’s a death both terrifying and impossible. Assigned to investigate is Ana Dolabra, a detective whose reputation for brilliance is matched only by her eccentricities. Rumor has it that she wears a blindfold at all times, and that she can solve impossible cases without even stepping outside the walls of her home.

Another annoying hero
Revisado: 05-03-24
A hero that is highly trained yet remains impulsive, immature, and often silly. Centuries old men that still don’t know any better than to fall in love based on looks - cuz that personality was nothing much to hang a crown on.

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Oddly Unattached Characters
Revisado: 04-27-24
I finished this story. I wanted to know what would happen and it is well written. However I didn’t like it that much. The main man is interesting in his damage, both taken and done, but doesn’t seem like a man that can carry a conversation, be amusing, or stimulate curiosity so I cannot understand the attraction to him. The sisters are insular and cliqueish and shallowly drawn. More like a part of a person than individuals.

In the last years of the dying Qing Empire, a courtesan is found frozen in a doorway. Her death is clouded by rumors of foxes, which are believed to lure people by transforming themselves into beautiful women and handsome men. Bao, a detective with an uncanny ability to sniff out the truth, is hired to uncover the dead woman’s identity. Since childhood, Bao has been intrigued by the fox gods, yet they’ve remained tantalizingly out of reach—until, perhaps, now.

Silly foxes
Revisado: 04-27-24
The story is very fun to listen to, the foxes are charming, interesting, and rather foolish in nway that makes sense for the creatures they are.
The reader is lively and clear . I’ve enjoyed all the stories she narrates. I’ve also enjoyed the other books by this author and recommend them.

Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

Well told story
Revisado: 10-28-23
Loads of details that can get tedious if you’re not the type to indulge in lengthy descriptions, but the language is marvelous. Main character is short sighted, not so smart, and full of self-pity; rather than being as annoying as that normally is, in this story it fits her life story and childhood experiences. She does mature in a natural way and yet not so much as to seem contrived. The narrator is perfect. Well-written.

Very engaging, unique main character
Revisado: 10-13-23
This is a great book to listen to. It’s great that the main character is in her 60’s and perfectly normal, except for some dissatisfaction with a life lived sedately. The action in the second half of the story is quite good. Positive, rather unique, and enjoyable story.
