Historia
In Chase Darkness with Me, you’ll ride shotgun as journalist Billy Jensen identifies the Halloween Mask Murderer, finds a missing girl in the California Redwoods, and investigates the only other murder in New York City on 9/11. You’ll hear intimate details of the hunts for two of the most terrifying serial killers in history: his friend Michelle’s pursuit of the Golden State Killer which is chronicled in I’ll Be Gone In The Dark which Billy helped finish after Michelle’s passing, and his own quest to find the murderer of the Allenstown 4 family.

A little self-indulgent at times
Revisado: 05-20-22
Despite the fact that this author has devoted his life to solving crimes for no personal gain, the book itself feels a little bit self-indulgent at times. if you're interested in becoming a citizen sleuth, it's probably worth a read. Otherwise, it wasn't very compelling for me.

At times fascinating, but overall poorly written
Revisado: 12-23-21
I expected more from this book. It contained a few frustrating contradictions, at times it repeated stories it had previously covered, and although it did contain a number of fascinating facts, it really failed to provide the kind of nuance and detail that the subject matter demanded. It felt like there was a lot more to the story left to be told. The truly frustrating problem was the monotone delivery of the speaker. I question if it was even a real person.

Interesting but lacking
Revisado: 03-13-18
I had hoped for more details about the negotiation process itself, and I would have liked to have heard about more real world examples. My biggest complaint is that the author sounded a little self-indulgent at times. Overall I would say it was interesting and worth the time.

Historia
In September 1776, the vulnerable Continental army under an unsure George Washington evacuated New York after a devastating defeat by the British army. Three weeks later, near the Canadian border, one of his favorite generals, Benedict Arnold, miraculously succeeded in postponing the British naval advance down Lake Champlain that might have lost the war. As this book ends, four years later, Washington has vanquished his demons, and Arnold has fled to the enemy. America was forced at last to realize that the real threat to its liberties might not come from without but from within.

a good primer, but...
Revisado: 02-27-18
A good primer on the history behind Benedict Arnold's treason, but it lacks the intimate details of other biographies. Some of the details of surrounding events were in error, including the now debunked final words of Nathan Hale. To be fair, it would have been accurate to describe them as what the Americans believed to be true at the time, as that was the more important point, but accuracy in a biography such as this is paramount.

Historia
12 Strong is the dramatic account of a small band of Special Forces soldiers who secretly entered Afghanistan following 9/11 and rode to war on horses against the Taliban. Outnumbered 40 to one, they pursued the enemy army across the mountainous Afghanistan terrain and, after a series of intense battles, captured the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The bone-weary American soldiers were welcomed as liberators as they rode into the city. Then the action took a wholly unexpected turn.

Good story, hard to follow
Revisado: 02-12-18
Not what I expected. It's about so much more than 12 soldiers. The only real negative is that there are so many different characters in different places it's hard to follow along.

Historia
Prosecuting attorney in the Manson trial Vincent Bugliosi held a unique insider's position in one of the most baffling and horrifying cases of the 20th century: the cold-blooded Tate-LaBianca murders carried out by Charles Manson and four of his followers. What motivated Manson in his seemingly mindless selection of victims, and what was his hold over the young women who obeyed his orders? Now available for the first time in unabridged audio, the gripping story of this famous and haunting crime is brought to life by acclaimed narrator Scott Brick.

Story is better than the book
Revisado: 02-01-18
It's a compelling story, but there is an underlying arrogance to the author that is off-putting. The author also wastes too much time on the smallest of details and rehashing the same points over and over. It could have been and should have been a shorter book. Still, it's a thorough accounting of a fascinating true story.

Historia
On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed in the South Pacific by a Japanese submarine. An estimated 300 men were killed upon impact; close to 900 sailors were cast into the Pacific Ocean, where they remained undetected by the navy for nearly four days and nights. Battered by a savage sea, they struggled to stay alive, fighting off sharks, hypothermia, and dementia. By the time rescue arrived, all but 317 men had died. The captain's subsequent court-martial left many questions unanswered

An extraordinary firsthand account of the Battle of Midway by one of its key participants, timed to the 75th anniversary: American dive-bomber pilot "Dusty" Kleiss helped sink three Japanese warships (including two aircraft carriers), received the Navy Cross, and is credited with playing a decisive individual role in determining the outcome of a battle that is considered a turning point in World War II.

Original perspective
Revisado: 09-07-17
Once you get past the background of Dusty and into his time in the Navy, it is very interesting and full of original information and perspective. My reason for giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is I wanted more information about the battle of Midway itself. I guess that's to be expected from an autobiography as opposed to a book intended to tell a complete account of the battle where they interview several different witnesses. Regardless, I would have liked more details about the battle itself.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

The author takes the complex story of several major players and weaves them together to provide a cohesive picture of the events. The author provides excellent details obviously born out of meticulous research.
