Historia
Hans Castorp is, on the face of it, an ordinary man in his early 20s, on course to start a career in ship engineering in his home town of Hamburg, when he decides to travel to the Berghof Santatorium in Davos. The year is 1912 and an oblivious world is on the brink of war. Castorp’s friend Joachim Ziemssen is taking the cure and a three-week visit seems a perfect break before work begins. But when Castorp arrives he is surprised to find an established community of patients, and little by little, he gets drawn into the closeted life and the individual personalities of the residents.

Testament to Humanism
Revisado: 07-17-24
Without a doubt in my list of top 10 books of all times. A towering achievement by a literary giant written during one of Europe’s darkest moments in modern history. Should serve as a reminder to never allow such a series of events to ever unfold, ever again, anywhere in the world. Outstanding narration.

Historia
A mere 18 years of age when his uncle, Julius Caesar, is murdered, Octavius Caesar prematurely inherits rule of the Roman Republic. Surrounded by men who are jockeying for power—Cicero, Brutus, Cassius, and Mark Antony—young Octavius must work against the powerful Roman political machinations to claim his destiny as first Roman emperor. Sprung from meticulous research and the pen of a true poet, Augustus tells the story of one man’s dream to liberate a corrupt Rome.

Great story
Revisado: 03-12-20
John Williams is a stellar author and this is one of those books that proves it. A wonderful arrangement of fragments from the life of one of the great emperors of the Roman Republic. It is strange how Williams was able to make an engrossing story out of tidbits of information, mostly letters between people who lived during his reign. The narration was also wonderful despite some reviewers alluding to the opposite. It is one of those books that is packed with lessons and the parallels from that time to the time we live today part of what make the review of history so compelling. A very intriguing read.

Historia
"Buried Alive" (1908) is a witty satire by Arnold Bennett about a shy painter. Excerpt from the book: "The peculiar angle of the earth's axis to the plane of the ecliptic - that angle which is chiefly responsible for our geography and therefore for our history - had caused the phenomenon known in London as summer. The whizzing globe happened to have turned its most civilized face away from the sun, thus producing night in Selwood Terrace, South Kensington.

Outstanding story & narration - horrible recording
Revisado: 02-24-20
The story is brilliant and the narration quite matches the story. The problem lies with the recording. It is just dismal. It sounds as if the protagonist is very far from the microphone. There is also plenty of audible and distracting background noise. In the end the extraordinary story won over the mediocre recording.

Historia
At the Madrid café where she stops for breakfast each day before work, María Dolz finds herself drawn to a couple who is also there every morning. Though she can hardly explain it, observing what she imagines to be their "unblemished" life lifts her out of the doldrums of her own existence. But what begins as mere observation turns into an increasingly complicated entanglement when the man is fatally stabbed in the street.

Maria's
1st the book: There is little denying that Javier Marias is a literary giant not just in the Spanish speaking world. His earlier book 'Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me' left an indelible imprint and a desire to want to read more of his works. The Infatuations is a book on the often destructive power that love and desire has on some people. Marias has an unconventional writing style ignoring some of the norms of diction. Yet that style is what sets his narrative apart from other authors. Pamuk was on the right track when he declared that Marias should be awarded the Nobel.
The narrator:
Justine Eyre does a wonderful job bringing this excellent piece of literature to life. Her slightly mezzo type voice gives the story the necessary darker tones it requires.
I immensely enjoyed immersing myself in the experience.
