Visions in Light & Shadow is a collection of short stories written by Author John Flynn. Reading Flynn's short stories, in particular his Hugo-nominated short story "A Gift of Verse," is like watching the New Year's day marathon of "Twilight Zone" episodes. Each one of them is a morality tale set in the proverbial "twilight zone." Flynn's running commentary provides some insight into why he wrote a particular tale, but it's really the stories themselves that have a whole lot more to say that what evolves within the confines of the Sci-Fi settings. They are all memorable in their own way!

Great Novel...Fair Narration

I have followed John Flynn's Kate Dawson thriller series since the first book, Intimate Bondage. He does a great job developing his protagonist, homicide detective Kate Dawson. Over the course of Flynn's five novels, she develops into an outstanding police detective from a wet-behind-the-ears Rookie. In this new thriller, she is up against a North Korean's general plot to destroy the G-20 conference in San Francisco, and the subplot is all about the evils of human trafficking. Somehow these divergent storylines merge into one plot. To say more would be to ruin the novel for you, which I would rate as one of the best in the series. My biggest problem with this new audio book is Courtney Shelly's narration. Throughout most of the book, she is rather flat, with occasional glimpses of greatness. Flynn has had two very outstanding narrators to this point in his series, and one so=so narrator. Shelly is fair, and should have been so much better.

Masterful Storytelling! 5 Stars All Around!

I've listened to several of the Kate Dawson thrillers on audio book, and I have concluded that Author John Flynn is a masterful storyteller. The secret to his success is that he incorporates wonderfully-realized characters into a simple murder mystery that warps into a baffling conspiracy. With Murder on Air Force One, a Fox news reporter is murdered in the first few pages of the novel, and several suspects who were passengers on board the President's "flying White House" emerge as the potential killer. Inspector Dawson is assigned the case, and suddenly, as additional suspects and clues come at a rapid pace, Flynn turns up the suspense and surprises. Who killed the Fox news reporter is less important than the reason "why" she was killed. It's not a simple murder after all, but the mother of all conspiracies which reach back to 1947 and the beginning of the Cold War. I loved the excellent writing and the plot which could have easily been torn from the front page of The New York Times. Kevin Chambers is outstanding as the narrator of the story. I love to listen to his voice, and plan to listen to the audio book a second time now that the holidays have passed. Great job John and Kevin. You guys keep them coming and I'll keep on buying!

I just finished listening to Architects of Armageddon. 5-Stars all around for a great story, an incredible audio performance by Kevin Chambers, and an outstanding book. I am reminded how fortunate I am, when I read a book like this, that I live the life I do. I am surrounded by great friends at work, at home, and at church. Kate Dawson put herself out there to save the people she loves and stop really bad people from doing bad things. I'm grateful for the men and women of our local police who put themselves on the line every day for us. While I realize this is a fictional tale, I also know that it reflects the lives of our police and fire and first responders. What a great message to send, particularly at Thanksgiving.

A Cry for Environmental Change!

When I started listening to John Flynn's latest audio book, I assumed that it was yet another one of his thrillers. Only set, this time, in a science fiction locale, like a space station orbiting Jupiter. Well, it is, but it is also a whole lot more than that. Yes, there are several murders, sabotage, revenge, blackmail, espionage, and sex which are hallmarks of Flynn's Kate Dawson mystery series. I've already listened to a couple of his thrillers, and enjoyed them. What I wasn't prepared for and pleasantly surprised by was the underlying theme of the novel. The Jovian Dilemma is a cry for environmental change. Though the story is set 100 years from now, it's as much about climate change on earth and being responsible for our world's environmental problems than just protecting the Jovians and their ecological systems. I loved that aspect of the story, and I would encourage other people who are equally worried about climate change to listen to this book. A truly thoughtful work of science fiction!

I had read and enjoyed this book in 2014. I also enjoyed listening to this book again on audio. I liked the mystery aspects of the story, and now understand so much better. Lots of naughty fun as well. Ladies, you will it. Trust me.

I enjoy listening to audio books in my car on days when I've got a lot of household chores to run. On Thursday, after sampling a couple of new books, I decided to give Merchants of Death by John L. Flynn a try. After stops at the bank, my local drive-up pharmacy, church, and thrift store, I was totally hooked by the riveting story. I didn't even mind sitting in my car to let a sudden rainstorm pass, while Geoffrey Boyes skillfully described a suspense-filled race against time to stop a runaway train, filled with a deadly toxin, from killing thousands at a baseball game. The writing was crisp, characters interesting, and plot thoroughly entertaining. I just couldn't stop listening. I had never "read" a book by Flynn before, but believe you me, I will be on the lookout for his other Kate Dawson thrillers on audio books in the future. What a great way to spend a day filled with chores!
