Historia
In 2007, Dr. Martin MacNeill - a doctor, lawyer, and Mormon bishop - discovered his wife of 30 years dead in the bathtub of their Pleasant Grove, Utah, home, her face bearing the scars of a facelift he had persuaded her to undergo just a week prior. At first the death of 50-year-old Michele MacNeill, a former beauty queen and mother of eight, appeared natural. But days after the funeral, when Dr. MacNeill moved his much younger mistress into the family home, his children grew suspicious.

You’re better off watching the ABC News special
Revisado: 05-15-21
The ABC News special had everything the book covered plus you got to see what everyone looked like. The narrator was ok but not great.
Extremely sad story. Horrible man!

Awful
Revisado: 10-07-19
Be warned it’s awful. I thought seriously about returning. I didn’t want to finish but kept thinking it would get better, it didn’t. The main character was ridiculous. She was a highly educated woman, a psychiatrist, yet acted so naive. Also, if she was a truly sick as was written, all the throwing up, not eating etc, she would most likely have been hospitalized. The whole book has so many plot holes and unneeded characters introduced that are never heard from again. The plot is so far fetched

Narrator makes it come alive!
Revisado: 09-22-19
I really enjoyed CAABC. It was one of those quick, happy reads. The characters were interesting, I found myself so eager to get to each new chapter to find out what they were up to!
The book itself is well written but, the narrator, Katherine Kellgren, made it come alive. I felt like I was listening to a theatrical performance, she really made each character stand out. The voice she gave to each woman just seemed to fit with how Cathy Cooperman had written them.
I would definitely recommend.

Historia
The great Calder empire stretched across the Montana plains as far as the eye could see. Everyone knew a Calder's word was law, and that one day Chase Calder would carry the family name to new glories. But for handsome, arrogant Chase Calder there was also beautiful Maggie O'Rourke. She came to him in innocence and stirred in him a deep, insistent longing.

Great romance novel, TERRIBLE narrator
Revisado: 03-24-19
The Caulder series is one of my favorite romance series from the 80’s.
The classic Romeo and Juliette story of feuding neighbors, in this case, ranchers. One ranch, the Caulder ranch is huge and profitable and the O’Rourke ranch is barely scraping by. Chase Caulder, 22 sees Maggie O’Rourke, 16 swimming in a creek one day and decides to prank her by taking her clothes. The prank doesn’t go off as planned and the two end up getting romantic. Maggie’s father finds out and seeks vengeance on the Caulders for “taking whatever they want, including his little girl”. Chase and Maggie’s romance heats up the whole summer until tragedy strikes. What happens next sends Maggie far from Chase but enables her to achieve her dreams of becoming an educated “lady” and into the arms of an influential plastic surgeon. Back in Montana, Maggie’s brother keeps the flames of hatred of the Caulders alive...
My girlfriends and I read this series as a teens and loved the Caulder men and the leading ladies in each novel.
I moved on from romance novels to reading mostly thrillers, so last week I was thinking about a light read. Janet Daley’s Caulder series came to mind. It had been over 30 years since I’d read these stories but was very excited about going back to Montana and feel like I was on a cattle ranch and “see” Chase and Maggie’s romance unfold. This is until...
I heard the narrator! Why would the narrator be an old English woman?!? Not only is the accent wrong but she takes pauses when she shouldn’t and doesn’t pause when she should. She reads with hardly any emotion. It ruined the book and experience for me. She has all of the cowboys but Chase and Webb sounding like whiney old women. The leading lady in the story who is 16 throughout 2/3 of the book sounds like a 70 year old woman. Plus add the odd English/Irish accent she put on her, it’s ludicrous.
Bottom line, the writing is good. It’s typically 80/90’s romance. It’s a great series. But this narrator absolutely ruined it. I cannot tell you how disappointing this is.
Just get the Kindle version. Start with number 1. This Caulder Range and work your way through. It’s the history of the ranch and the Caulder family.

Over the Top Performance...
Revisado: 07-17-16
I liked the concept of this book. I was very excited to listen to it. My excitement turned to annoyance very shortly into the book.
Right off, it was disappointing that the voice sounded way too old for the character. Jillian was 27-34 but sounded 50-60. Gabrielle de Cuir was the narrator. She ruined this book for me. Her performance was SO over the top, it was ridiculous. There were times, towards the end, when the performance isn't so bad. I can tell that when she isn't over acting, she might be a good narrator.
The actual story is pretty good. A young woman is complacent in life. Jillian is married, is a stay at home mom. She starts wondering if "she had it to do over again" would she make the same choices that brought her to where she is today. Unlike the rest of us who have ever wondered that, she actually gets the chance! She finds herself 7 years in the past and able to choose again between to two lives of her life. For every mistake she tries to "right" in her past, she realizes she changes things in her future. Not just for herself, but for those she loves.
So in recap, really annoying, dramatic narrator but the story is worth a read.
