Historia
This is the definitive biography of the most powerful man in Hollywood during the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, the man who founded The Hollywood Reporter and the most storied nightspots of the Sunset Strip. In the 30 years as Tinseltown’s premier behind-the-scenes power broker, Billy Wilkerson introduced Clark Gable and Lana Turner to the world, brought the Mafia to Hollywood, and engineered the shakedown of the Hollywood studios by Willie Bioff and his mob-run unions. He also helped to invent Las Vegas, tangled with Bugsy Siegel (and possibly was involved with his murder), and touched off the Hollywood blacklist.

Spectacular
Revisado: 06-17-22
So much of the folklore regarding Hollywood or organized crime is grounded in half-truths. Thus book was a such a breath of fresh air. It is more of an academic study as opposed to a casual pleasure read. The historical context is given great consideration and shines through at every turn. In sum, there is much to be learned regarding the life and times of Billy Wilkerson.

Overall great quality
Revisado: 07-25-21
I read several of the reviews before buying this one. Many noted the narrator's performance and how it was distracting. I picked up on this, too, but I think they were going for a "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," which, when I thought about it was nice. The overall product is excellent, though!

Refreshing
Revisado: 12-28-20
I loved this book. It was refreshing on a number of different levels. That said, I was disappointed to see the lack of Obama's thoughts on Trump's ascendancy to the presidency. The intro reads as though this topic would be addressed at length. Then, toward the end, there seems to be an implication that he would get back into the Trump world and its relevance to American politics in the modern era. Aside from that, though, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Health and wellness campaigns preach avoidance of unhealthy foods, sedentary lifestyles, tobacco, drugs, and alcohol, but rarely preach avoidance of unhealthy, difficult, or toxic people. Yet the health benefits of removing toxic people from your life may have far greater benefits to both physical and psychological health. We need to learn to be better gatekeepers for our minds, bodies, and souls. Narcissism, entitlement, and incivility have become the new world order, and we are all in trouble. They are not only normalized but also increasingly incentivized.

Entertaining, intelligent, and inspiring. Highly recommend this book for both those struggling with the issues examined within it and social "observers" of this epidemic.

Although much has been written about Al Capone, there has not been-until now-a complete history of organized crime in Chicago during Prohibition. This exhaustively researched book covers the entire period from 1920 to 1933. Author John J. Binder, a recognized authority on the history of organized crime in Chicago, discusses all the important bootlegging gangs in the city and the suburbs and also examines the other major rackets, such as prostitution, gambling, labor and business racketeering, and narcotics.

5 stars!
Revisado: 10-24-19
This is a exhaustively researched work that offers a professor approach to organized crime in Chicago in the Prohibition era. It is not focused on the sensationalized headlines but rather the emergence, growth, and development of organized crime in its formative years. The narration was excellent, too.

Mickey Cohen, who died in 1976, was a colorful, feared West Coast gangster-gambler who knew the biggest names in Hollywood including the Rat Pack, was a confidant of Bugsy Siegel, a friend of Las Vegas' late Liz Renay and on first names with the biggest guys in the Mafia, plus Frank Sinatra, Richard Nixon and Billy Graham. Brad Lewis' book about Cohen draws from thousands of resources - a virtual treasure trove of Mafia-related books, articles and interviews.

Good read
Revisado: 11-09-17
The book itself is informative and well-written. The narration is too fast and jumbled to the point that it is distracting. It read like a nervous graduate student presenting a paper at his or her first ever National Conference.

Historia
Gangsterismo is an extraordinary accomplishment, the most comprehensive history yet of the clash of epic forces over several decades in Cuba. It is a chronicle that touches upon deep and ongoing themes in the history of the Americas, and more specifically of the United States government, Cuba before and after the revolution, and the criminal networks known as the Mafia.

Fascinating study but more politically-focused that I imagined. It makes a meaningful contribution to the study of organized crime even if the Mafia's role gets lost at times.
