Lovely Found Family
Revisado: 04-08-25
This was a great found family story, which I am a sucker for. It was especially nice to hear a story with a main character who is in his 40s with thinning hair and a “spare tire.” Although I love books with extremely cool & hot guy/gal main characters, it’s nice to see a book with characters who are all so real, despite many being wonderfully magical. I am immensely looking forward to reading more from this author and series. Thank you!

Amazing story, not great listening
Revisado: 05-26-23
I love this story & will probably even listen to it again at some point, but I can’t recommend this to friends due to the whiny voice the narrator uses for Jonas & the strange music that sounds like it’s out of a corporate training video. The Giver is a beautiful book & I recommend it to anyone, but the audiobook made me wince many times throughout because I felt like I was listening to someone trying to play a petulant 6 year old rather than a very mature & even-dispositioned 12 year old - there’s a lot of free readings online & I will likely turn there next time I want to listen to this book

Beautiful, a bit distracted
Revisado: 06-14-21
I really really love this, and I actually quite enjoy the interjections of the narrator; however, his talking about his ex at very important parts of the story bothered me somewhat.
Loved it so much I listened to it over the course of just two days (sped up, but still incredibly long) while cooking, cleaning, and playing games

Historia
At 19, almost 20, Ron Bancroft is newly out as transgender and finds himself adrift: kicked out by his family, jilted by his girlfriend, and unable to afford to return to college in the fall. So he heads out to Wyoming for a new start, a chance to prove that - even though he was raised as a girl, even though everyone in Boston thinks of him as transgender - he can live as a man. A real man. In Wyoming, he finds what he was looking for: rugged terrain, wranglers, and a clean slate. He also stumbles into a world more dangerous than he imagined, one of bigotry and violence.

Most Accurate to my Experience
Revisado: 06-07-21
As a trans guy, this is the most accurate book to my experience that I’ve ever read (well, listened to) and I’ve listened to it five or so times now in the last year and plan to listen to it many more. It’s by far my favorite book and I recommend it to anyone trying to learn about the trans experience.
