When I find myself chuckling to myself reading a particular character's remarks or get angry on a plot twist I realize that I am lost in the book and wouldn't have it any other way! This is a wonderful series and I have already pre-ordered the next book.

Before i get critical i would like to say that the narration was wonderful. Andrea has the ability to create multiple characters in her storytelling and is very easy to listen to. The story however, while starting off in an interesting manner and capturing my attention suddenly took a left turn in character creation. A "Gunsinger" with the last name of "Deschain"? And there were more similarities to King and Tolkien in the books! Way too many to not make this book pretty derivative if not bordering on plageristic! Its one thing using the masters as inspiration, but quite another almost using their characters or specific scenarios in your book.

I have always loved Stephen King novels and this one is no exception. The story is riveting and the narrator keeps the characters separate and interesting. All that said, what juvenile producer thought that it was a good idea to insert an extremely annoying soundtrack into the story at odd times and at a volume that drowns out the narrator. Whoever he/she is they should never be allowed to produce another audio book! VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE PURCHASE!!

Loved both books in this series so far as I am a gamer and can relate to the story-line and characters. As far as narration goes, don't get me wrong Ms. Rennie has a very engaging voice when she is NOT trying to use an accent. The horrific English accents not to mention the cringe-worthy Scottish accents made me almost reach for the stop button. I am really hoping that if there is a book 3 and the same narrator is used, she will have taken some classes in language/speech elocution beforehand. I am really not trying to flame the narrator as i like her non-accented voice a lot, its just that her bad accents detract from the fun of the book.

One observation however. Since when did the FBI agent Aloysius Pendergast from New Orleans, Louisiana start speaking with an English accent? OOPS!

Where to begin? The idea of the story really aroused my interest. A long abandoned warship from a long dead race mixed with the threat of a new, hostile, implacable race of supermen. I was immediately caught and purchased the book regardless of the substantial amount of poor reviews. First off the narration was really poor with the delivery being on the same level with a computer generated artificial voice. And the character effects were awful with Kevin having an accent that seemed to combine a Glasgow/Liverpool thing that made me think of a hybrid Scotty from Startrek/Ringo Starr character. Aside from the delivery I found the writing itself to be juvenile, full of cliché and reminiscent of 50's pulp sci-fi. The science was high school level with little explanation. All this said, I listened to the entire piece to be fair and I can safely say I will not be buying the sequels.

Where did they find this reader? He sounds like a Edward R. Murrow wannabe. No more Michael Prichard for me.

Having just endured an 11+ hour journey that for all intents and purposes dropped me right back where I started, I am a bit frustrated that the authors could not have done a better job on the ending. Hooking the readers with a cliffhanger in order to sell subsequent books is all fine and good but this one went a bit too far. As usual though, Rene Auberjonois brought life to all the characters and managed to keep my interest through a few scenes that were perhaps just a bit silly and predictable. All that said, I suppose I will be purchasing the next installment with the hope that it will lead me to a more satisfying ending.

The Terry Goodkind series is really a great read. I have read it in print and have been listening up to this book. Book ones narrator made the story come alive and riveted you to your earbud. This Jim Bond guy should be reading technical manuals to the deaf. He has all of the energy, inflection and drive of an 80's answering machine! I will NOT be buying any more books with this guy narrating. Sorry Jim, nothing personal, but you suck at this job.
