Just couldn't finish it....
Revisado: 07-15-24
OK, I bought this book because I loved the movie, In general, the books that movies are made of are so much better. However, not this one (my opinion only). Maybe it's because I'm not a cook and learning to cook "the French way" would not be interesting or enticing to me. I found it slow. Also, I didn't like the language used. Again, my opinion only, but wanted to share, I REALLY wanted to like it. I listened way past the Stephen King 10% rule too...oh well. Sorry.

Good, but sad story
Revisado: 02-12-23
I’ve had this book in my Audible library for years and finally listened. A good, but a very tragic and sad story. What should have been a wonderful event for this couple turned to sadness. The author did a great job in moving the story along and I was engaged throughout. I could have done without the f bomb. I hope this wasn’t his daughter’s first word. I do recommend the book. It’s a good lesson for dealing with grief.

HIGHLY Recommend this and the whole series!!
Revisado: 12-16-22
I have listened to each of the books in this series that our talented Denny Brownlee has recorded for the author Jenny L Cote and Audible. The stories are wonderful. Jenny L. Cote weaves Biblical stories about God’s people and historical facts around some very entertaining and gifted animal characters. Her knowledge of the Bible, historical events and wonderful imagination, and of course her delivery of these in the written word is amazing.
Denny’s God-given talent of bringing Jenny’s words to our ears is equally amazing. After listening for just a few minutes, you will think that there is a cast of 30 or more in the recording studio. No, It’s just Denny who speaks with accents from Scotland, England, France, Middle East, Africa and so many more. The speed and fluency in which he does these conversations is breathtaking.
Besides the Biblically based books, the series continues into the founding of America. Jenny makes these historical events so much more fascinating than they were in my grade school history books!
The eight book (so far) series is available on Amazon and I do recommend having the paperback copies to refer to. But to really get involved in the stories, you HAVE TO HEAR DENNY, so go to Audible and download the 5 books that he has recorded. You will not be sorry.

Beautiful telling of God's redemption
Revisado: 09-17-22
First of all, I love Eugenia Price's books. This year, I've re-read the St. Simon's Trilogy and have started the Georgia series. I had read "The Burden Is Light" several years ago, but was so excited when I saw that Audible had this and her other non-fiction books in their catalog. I've just finished listening and DID NOT want it to end! What a wonderful story of God's transformation of Genie Price's life. I did not know (or didn't remember from the first reading) that she was really not a believer before her childhood friendship with Ellen was rekindled. Genie went to belief in Jesus' redemptive power kicking and arguing, but when she fully believed....she BELIEVED and turned her entire life around to honor and worship Him alone. The narration by Susie Althens is excellent and I recommend this book totally. May God Bless You as you enter into Genie Price's story of her transformation from pagan to believer.

Wow! What a nail biter!
Revisado: 10-21-20
Lots of things happening in this installment of the Claire and Russ series. As I wrote in my last review of One Was A Soldier, I don't understand why so many negative reviews. I'm so glad I didn't give into those reviews and quit this series. I'm listening consecutively to all 9 books and have one more to go. I will seriously be in denial after that, and will mourn not hearing about my friends in Miller's Kill. This book, Through the Evil Days has a lot happening, both good and bad. I see this as real life, not just something made up. Clare and Russ take off on their honeymoon, but trouble lurks close by there as well as pending job issues for each of them. Hadley and Flynn have their own troubles in their on again/off again relationship, and I'll not give any spoilers on that one. All in all, these characters all care for and about their neighbors, and they want to make the world, and their little village a nice and safe place to live. I'm looking forward to the next book already queued up, and hope the author continues this series.

Love this series and this book!
Revisado: 10-08-20
I totally love this entire series of The Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne Mysteries and I think this book was one of the strongest. I almost succumbed to the negative reviews of this one, and am glad I didn't and quit. I'm actually listening to the entire series consecutively because I want to stay into Miller's Kill community until the end. This book deals with difficult subjects: PTSD, drugs, alcoholism, anger, fraud, suicide, abuse, murder....but you know what? Those are real subjects facing our world and our communities. I just scanned some of the reviews before starting this review to remind myself why I "almost" listened to them and want to quickly share those here. 1) Narrator bad - Suzanne Toren has been the narrator since Book 1. You don't enjoy her gravelly voice for the male characters? So? Get over it. She does a great job, and I don't even hear her voice. I hear Clare and Russ and Lyle and.... The story is what's important. Go to the library and pick up the physical book if you don't like her voice. 2) The book is slow. Really? There were so many story lines and characters in this book. How could it be slow? It ran. Enough said. I can't remember some of the other things now so they must not be important. Not to give any spoilers, but folks...this is the ending we've been waiting for! Woot!

Historia
When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.

Louise Penny has done it again...BRAVO!
Revisado: 12-17-18
I love the Three Pines, Chief Inspector Gamache mysteries! Each builds upon the one before. If you are a new reader of this series, I recommend that you start back at the beginning with "Still Life" and work forward, as there is just so much history, and character development that has happened throughout the years. But, this should be a review of "Kingdom of the Blind." Great storyline, anticipation of what was to come next, who really "done-it!!", and who didn't. Ms. Penny skillfully intertwines multiple threads together and it isn't hard to follow at all. The anticipation comes when you feel the answer is near, and she takes you to another thread. Tricky! However, I loved the outcome, including an introduction to the next installment which was introduced just enough to keep us thinking about it until Fall 2019 when we will get to visit again with our old friends. Bravo again, Ms. Penny! And bravo Robert Bathurst....you are the voice of all of our dear friends.

Only God knew why Jillian Slater agreed to return to New Orleans on the news that her father had finally drunk himself to death. It's not like they were close. She hadn't seen him - or her grandmother, the ice queen - in almost 20 years. But when Adella Atwater, the manager of her grandmother's apartment house, called and said her expenses would be paid if she'd fly in for the burial, a free trip to New Orleans was too intriguing to resist.

First of all, I love mysteries, good story lines, and Beth Moore's indepth Bible Studies. When I saw she had written a novel, and a mystery no less, I had to check it out. Just finished on my ride into work this morning, and wish it would have gone on for a few more hours. Totally enjoyable story. Loved the quirky characters that make up the residents of Saint Silvanus, and the ways they grew and changed. Good job Beth. Please write more, and a sequel to "The Undoing of Saint Silvanus" would be welcome.

Millions of Karon fans will be thrilled that it's life as usual in the wildly popular Mitford series: A beloved town character lands a front-page obituary, but who was it, exactly, who died? And what about the former mayor, born the year Lindbergh landed in Paris, who's still running for office? All this, of course, is but a feather on the wind compared to Muse editor J. C. Hogan's desperate attempts to find a cure for his marital woes. Will it be high-def TV or his pork chop marinade?

How wonderful to catch up with all the residents of Mitford once again. So many memories of time spent in past years/books. I love them all, and Jan Karon did not disappoint with this latest installment. The saddest part is waiting another year or so to find out how Father Tim and Cynthia's next adventure turns out. Historia
Martin Luther entered a monastery as a youth and as a man shattered the structure of the medieval church, speaking out against the corrupt religious practices of the time. His demand that the authority for doctrine and practice be scriptures, rather than popes or councils, echoed around the world and ignited the great Reformation. Accused of heresy and threatened with excommunication and death, Luther maintained his bold stand and refused to recant. In his crusade to eliminate religious abuses, he did more than any other man to establish the Protestant faith.

In honor of the upcoming 500th Reformation Anniv.
Revisado: 09-25-17
The 500th Anniversary of the Reformation and Martin Luther's nailing of the 95 Theses to the Castle Church door will soon be here on All Saints Day, Oct 29th, 2017. I read this as background about Martin Luther as part of a 12 part Reformation Sunday school class leading up to the anniversary. I knew bits and parts of the story, but not the details about Luther's life and how the 95 Theses came to be. I admit that I day dreamed through some of this narration, but there were MANY chapters where I stayed with it, and learned. I recommend this book greatly, not only for historical reasons, but for knowledge of how the protestant church broke away from catholicism.
