Best WWI Origin book yet

The book brings back the Serbians into a more central role in the cause. Fascinating detail about the Balkan conflicts. Yet it also points out how although you can twist the story to blame any 1 person or country - it is not that simple. .

In 1519 Magellan and his fleet of five ships set sail from Seville, Spain, to discover a water route to the fabled Spice Islands in Indonesia, where the most sought-after commodities (cloves, pepper, and nutmeg) flourished. Three years later, a handful of survivors returned with an abundance of spices from their intended destination, but with just one ship carrying 18 emaciated men. During their remarkable voyage around the world the crew endured starvation, disease, mutiny, and torture. Many men died, including Magellan, who was violently killed in a fierce battle.

History at its worst

As an avid reader of history for over 40 years, I must say this is absolutely the most self indulgent nonsense I have ever come across. If you want to hear ridiculous references to everyone from MLK to Bessie Smith, and the obligatory swings at George W Bush, in a book that pretends to be about the Middle Ages, go ahead. If you want to learn how the Renaissance got it's start, look elsewhere.
The authors' over bloated prose, packed full of pseudo-intellectual double negatives reeks of an ego I have never seen or heard in any other historian's works. I tried as hard as I could to put up with the book; after 2 hours it was more than I could stand.

The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Where does The Devil in the White City rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This book ranks pretty well compared to otherhistory books I've read. The author is not quite as good as David McCullough but who is?

Well researched. Loads of detail. A great primer on the exposition and Chicago of the late 19th century.
