Best Audiobook ever!
Revisado: 04-02-19
I have a 4 year old and a 1 year old and both my kids love love LOVE Laurie Berkner! We knew her from her very kid-friendly original songs so when I saw this audiobook on the Audible Originals Member page, I bought it immediately. Fast forward several months and both kids still ask to hear Laurie every single day. The best part is that the stories are so well-done that I haven’t gotten sick of them, either. Laurie, we love you! Please make a sequel!!!!

Superb Start to a Great Series
Revisado: 03-13-12
What made the experience of listening to Mistress of the Art of Death the most enjoyable?
How exciting to listen to a historical novel based 1000 years ago that is so vibrant and real! I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this book. I learned a lot of stuff about Henry II, the Crusades, and the Fenlands from the book, and was so interested that I researched all three topics more!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Mistress of the Art of Death?
Just about every scene is very memorable, but I really enjoyed the scene where Adelia wins Prior Geoffrey to her side at the beginning of the book.
Which scene was your favorite?
The
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Every time the book touched on the children, I was sad. What terrible crimes, and the first was based on a true crime, as the author's note explains. I am just amazed to think that people really may not have changed that much in 1000 years.

Breathless and painstakingly researched, this is a stunning debut mystery in which Sherlock Holmes unmasks Jack the Ripper. Lyndsay Faye perfectly captures all the color and syntax of Conan Doyle’s distinctive nineteenth-century London.

Good story, but not engrossing
Revisado: 03-13-12
Would you consider the audio edition of Dust and Shadow to be better than the print version?
Yes - Simon Vance is an awesome narrator and did a good job keeping me involved with the story as well as bringing the characters and circumstances alive.
Would you recommend Dust and Shadow to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, as long as they aren't avid Holmes fans. I don't think this book is really on par with some of the other Conan Doyle follow-ups out there. The action was plodding, Holmes and Watson just a shade off, and I didn't actually find the story to be that engrossing. I love the idea of Jack the Ripper being investigated by Holmes, but in the end the story was just a touch boring.
What about Simon Vance’s performance did you like?
Simon Vance always does a great job narrating! He really brings native flavor to British books, and his voice is perfect as Watson.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reaction. As the book wasn't too great, I did put it down multiple times. It was still good enough to enjoy, but not good enough to read again.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

Superb Tale for the Senses
Revisado: 03-06-12
If you could sum up The Night Circus in three words, what would they be?
Dark, crisp, alive
What other book might you compare The Night Circus to and why?
I don't think there is a book that compares. The Night Circus is a stand-alone book.
What about Jim Dale’s performance did you like?
He did a great job for all characters and really brought the book alive.
If you could take any character from The Night Circus out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Poppet! I just find her
Any additional comments?
This book is very rich in sensory information. The story is built into the scenery and background. If you like short, to-the-point stories, this isn't something you would enjoy. If you want to be able to picture the entire story on the backs of your eyelids, you will love this book!

Well Told Yarn
Revisado: 03-06-12
If you could sum up Keturah and Lord Death in three words, what would they be?
Bittersweet, fireside fairy-tale.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Hmmm... that is a toss-up between Keturah and Lord Death. I liked both characters, and I guess I will have to go with Keturah because we get to know her better than Lord Death. Keturah is a really sweet girl, generous, loving, and she is clever, too.
What does Alyssa Bresnahan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Since this book is in story form (told around the Common Fire), I think it is best read aloud. The narrator did a great job, and I think her voice really fits the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The end scene, of course!
Any additional comments?
I actually bought this audiobook in 2008 but I don't remember listening to it. As I went through My Library a few weeks ago, I came across the title and decided to listen again to refresh my memory. Well, this story is definitely not something I would forget, so I don't think I ever listened to begin with. I highly recommend the story for anyone who loves fairy-tales, whimsical stories, and love stories that are safe for even pre-teens.

Just Okay...
Revisado: 03-06-12
While I did mostly enjoy the story, I found the narrator to drone on monotonously. What I found most interesting about the story is the fact that it was written and based in the 80s... really a flashback to be reading this book 30 or so years after publication. I couldn't decide if I liked Kinsey or not. If you are looking for a perfect heroine, this is not your book. I think I will check out some more books in this series in the future, but not sure if I would listen if they are read by the same narrator.

Nothing I Can Empathize With
Revisado: 02-24-12
Would you try another book from Russell Banks and/or Mary Beth Hurt?
No. I found the writing style to be boring, drawn out, and hard to enjoy. The narration was monotonous and boring as well.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Something lighthearted!
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She was monotonous and made me dislike the main character. I feel that with a better narrator, I could have had some sympathy for the main character.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Anger, mostly. I felt that the main character was contemptible and I couldn't find any single place where I empathized with her. She was racist is a backwards way, terrible as a wife and mother, and although she acknowledge these traits, she whined and made it seem like there was some huge government conspiracy out to get her all the time. Everything was about HER, and her whole attitude sickened and repulsed me.
Any additional comments?
Despite hating the main character, I did feel that I learned something from the book. I learned about Liberia, its history, etc. That was the only redeeming quality in a book that I feel was a waste of time.

Satisfactory ending
Revisado: 02-13-12
What made the experience of listening to The Night Eternal the most enjoyable?
I really like the firm resolution to the story.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Night Eternal?
The ending. That was the best part of the book. Also, I enjoyed how some of the background was explained in more detail.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Daniel Oreskes?
Yes, but I don't think he was the most effective narrator for this book.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Probably not. There were definitely some boring areas that made me want to put it down for a while.
Any additional comments?
I think the book could have been a little shorter. Some parts seemed a bit forced and long.

What made the experience of listening to With Morning Comes Mistfall: Free Story the most enjoyable?
I loved the narrator, the imagery introduced in the book, the characters.

It had a certain dreamlike quality that was very nice.
What about Claudia Black’s performance did you like?
Her voice is mesmerizing... goes well with the story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It's a short story... while it is good, it would have to have a LOT more plot to make me laugh or cry. I did really love the story, but nothing extreme about it.

Nothing special
Revisado: 02-13-12
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I would have enjoyed this story a little more if the ending hadn't been so obvious. While the story was creepy, it was creepy in a old-guy-fantasy way.
What was most disappointing about David Niall Wilson’s story?
Well, while the premise was sort of interesting, it really went no where. I think the whole story could have been done in 5 minutes. It sounded like something kids would tell around a campfire to scare each other, except for the old-guy-fantasy twist.
What didn’t you like about Basil Sands’s performance?
He sounded incredibly bored and monotonous. There was absolutely NO life in his narration. Maybe he hated the story more than I did!
