One of the few Manson’s I wish to spend time with… Although the mystery itself is besides the point this tail of inside British football and the premier of Philip Kerr’s Scott Manson has all the detail and sexy darkness of a modern styled Bernie Gunther tale.

Historia
Can a tough detective possess the soul of a poet? After a public reading brings him rousing applause, Falco receives an offer to have his work published. But his ego takes a beating when the banker Chrysippus demands payment for putting the verse on papyrus. Hell hath no fury like an author scorned, and when Chrysippus turns up murdered - in the library, no less - it's poetic justice. Appointed the official investigator, Falco's soon up to his stylus in outraged writers and shifty bankers.

Revisado: 02-06-25
As usual, Falco find the culprit with Èlan a bit of sentimentality and a good dose of Roman cultural history. Well done Lindsey Davis.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

A very interesting read
Revisado: 07-28-24
A twist on the Huckleberry Finn story, it tells the story from the perspective of Jim/JAMES. Unflinching in its depiction of Slavery in Missouri on the brink of Civil War, the narrator employs the philosophy of the enlightenment, inner monologue, and dreams to examine humanity and his condition with irony and sometimes humor. Never lacking in action, unsavory characters, and outrageous predicaments - James is a welcome addition to the cannon of southern literature and a fine exclamation point to the story of Huck Finn.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Historia
Elvis Cole is just a detective who can't say no, especially to a girl in a terrible fix. And Jennifer Sheridan qualifies: Her fiancé, Mark Thurman, is a decorated LA cop with an elite plainclothes unit, but Jennifer's sure he's in trouble - the kind of serious trouble that only Elvis Cole can help him out of. Five minutes after his new client leaves his office, Elvis and his partner, the enigmatic Joe Pike, are hip-deep in a deadly situation as they plummet into a world of South Central gangs, corrupt cops, and conspiracies of silence.

It is not the best plot Crais has written - much more sentimental than usual-and the jokes are worse than ever, but he creates great characters.

Historia
London’s Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their careers. The “Slow Horses,” as they’re called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here. Maybe they messed up an op badly, or got in the way of an ambitious colleague. Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle—not unusual in this line of work. One thing these failed spies have in common, though, is they all want to be back in the action. Now the Slow Horses have a chance at redemption.

Herron’s 2nd is a great listen. Although the plot is implausible, the prose is engaging, clever, and laugh out loud funny too. This is a group of characters that you want to spend hours engaging with… until you start the next Slow Horse Book!
