Creepy, excellent story
Revisado: 12-22-22
The general tone of the novel reminds me a bit of the pop-gothic author Lois Duncan, and it’s gorgeously performed by Karissa Vacker. Great for early teen readers!

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

This rendering was incredible - the writing, the reading performances - absolutely riveting.
It follows the original work beautifully but stands on its own. I probably liked it even more than The Handmaid’s Tale.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Revisado: 05-29-21
The book - which I know well and even teach - came to life in a whole new way through the talents of Dan Stevens.
I highly recommend it not just as an early Victorian gothic classic but also as a compelling morality tale.

I like Neil Gaiman’s creativity but found these stories dark, grimy and unsatisfying. If you’d like to read gritty narratives, however, they’ll do the trick.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet.

Outstanding, riveting story - so fascinating
Revisado: 09-06-20
Another terrific reading by Wil Wheaton - at times positively laugh out loud funny and always compelling. The tale is a bit of a mashup of "Cast Away" and "Apollo 13," but that said, it was super smart, compelling and just all-around cool. You should like sci-fi, space, survival narratives and first-person accounts (fictional) to truly enjoy the novel. I was impressed.

Historia
"Candide" is a delightful story filled with boundless misadventure while tackling the great philosophical issues of the Enlightenment era. The story is about Candide, a young man who is the illegitimate nephew of a German baron with whom he resides. When it is discovered he is kissing the baron's beautiful daughter he is thrown from the castle where he experiences the horrors of war, poverty, the maliciousness of man, and the hypocrisy of the church.

Exceptionally satirical story - very flawed reading, unfortunately
Revisado: 08-28-20
The story itself is fabulously satirical and really knocks both philosophy and everything else under the sun. And it’s an important part of literary history.
But the many pronunciation errors by the reader - including so many that really shouldn’t have been an issue - were distracting and took away from the overall enjoyment of the book.
I’d recommend it, but not by this reader. He has a good “voice over” style voice, but the lack of adequate practice shows.

Incredible story and MASTERFUL reading!
Revisado: 08-26-20
“Homegoing” is an extraordinary work that offers a level of long-range insight I’ve rarely, if ever, encountered in a novel. Its mixture of styles, perspectives and voices is incredibly effective as it tells the long history of the Gold Coast and the enduring effects of struggle and chance across generations.
