Just Overall Missed Me
Revisado: 12-17-24
This story began rather slowly. Patience required while the pieces get in place. Confusion when a second time line appears. There’s no way to tell when one story shifts to the other story- you just have to figure out that it did. In this manner the story continues like a handicapped three legged race, slowly and somewhat disjointedly. My eyes rolled occasionally, sometimes from boredom, sometimes from “you’re kidding.” To be honest, I finally just gave up with three hours to go when the author decided to spice the story up with the F word. I won’t be wasting the final three hours. The narration was ok, but I thought she laid on the French a bit too thickly. I never did figure out the purpose of the two timelines.

The Speeeeeead Was Sloooooow
Revisado: 09-12-24
This started out slow, Then it got even slower. With such a slow book, you’d think one could figure out what it was about, but that reveal came very late in the game. Best I could figure out, the author wanted to write a story about a closet homosexual so that ultimately she could show how a homosexual could be a “good” person. I had to give it low ratings because it bored me repeatedly. Nothing ever picked up the pace, sadly.

Revisado: 09-08-24
There were moments, but too much in between for holding my interest. I normally hang right in with Chuck’s books, but hard to recommend this one.

On a little-known planet, Archmage Varic Vallenar casts a grand spell to empower himself with the magical abilities of his alternate selves. The ritual works too well, granting Varic not only the magic but also the memories from six lives. Including their gruesome deaths. Now, Varic has power greater than any wizard in galactic history, but he knows that won’t be enough. The enemies he faced in those alternate lives were apocalyptic in scale. Terrors of technology and magic. Nothing that he, or anyone, can defeat.

One of the most enjoyable unbelievable stories you will ever have heard, narrated by one of the most gifted narrators at Audible. Thoroughly enjoyable story enhanced by the refreshing absence of crudeness or profanity… SO unlike Audible, I have to say.

Historia
When a nativity display on public property is torched by a former US Senator, the media spotlight falls on the forgotten small town of Leonard, Texas, and the new pastor of its only church—Adam Wells. Emboldened by the prospect of leading his tiny congregation in a nationally-televised, first amendment debate that he considers to be a “fight for the heart and soul of America,” Pastor Wells determines not to let anything or anyone, including his wife and his rebellious sixteen-year old daughter, stand in his way.

Depressing and Thick
Revisado: 01-30-24
This is the first Thoene piece that I have endured rather than enjoyed. From the start it was a dark themed story that just got darker as it proceeded. I endured it to the end, where it finally had a glimmer of the old Thoene stories. Unless I had a friend who really needed a good dose of depression, I just couldn’t recommend this to him. Some of their much earlier works of historical fiction contained the dark, sad realities of World War II, but themes of hope ran throughout them. I would highly recommend literally any of their earlier works…but not this one.

Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

Very Solid Apocalyptic Story
Revisado: 12-26-23
Nothing is more disappointing than a story that just stagnates and starts with the unbelievable to pull it towards the finish line. And nothing is more satisfying than a great story that leaves you wanting more. That’s Odd Billy Todd. The author is not only good, he’s also skilled. Said another way, this is not just a good book - it’s a great book, one you will want to listen to again. And the narrator is so good that you will want to pick up another book that he (Christopher Lane) narrates, A Gift of Time, which is one of the best sci-fi books you will find.

Great mystery and action
Revisado: 11-12-23
Craig Parshall is a really good author and Alan Nebelthau is a really good narrator. This was such a good story that I have listened to it twice now. The clean language made it especially enjoyable, even refreshing after most of Audible’s selections lately.

Isaac Bell stories always deliver what they promise! This one as well brings out some nice tidbits of life in the early days of aviation. The nostalgia and struggles of life back then all add up to a wonderful time in history.

Couldn’t Wait For Story to End
Revisado: 10-12-22
Have you ever had a night where you just could not fall asleep and you tossed and turned restlessly all night? Listening to this story was like that for me. Things that didn’t seem to matter just went on and on. Then, abruptly, it seemed we were in another story altogether. I was so glad when the story finally ended!
