Interesting, weird police procedural

Except for a strange and imperfectly-implemented sci-fi twist, it's a good noir cop story, with good characters and good narration. The sci-fi part, or maybe it's fantasy, is so subtle at first that it's hard to follow even though, or maybe because, all the characters understand perfectly. The ultimate explanation for the sci-fi part isn't especially believable, and it's hard to understand. The story is complex and hard to follow in audio; had I known, I probably would have read this rather than listening to it.

Unexceptional sword-and-sorcery fantasy

Fun, and it's supposed to be a classic, but the standards of the genre are low enough that only the best is even tolerable. I might pick up another one when stranded in an airport or some such, but I won't seek it out.

A poor follow-up

The first book in the series was okay, although it was roughly split between being an epic adventure (which I would have liked) and an historical romance (which at least I could have avoided.) This book, however, was neither; the first two-thirds (which was all I finished) was the incessant set-up for a complex story that clearly would not be completed in this book. This should have been about three chapters at the beginning of the substantive story. Good characters, and glimpses of an interesting story, but it needed ruthless editing, which it didn't get.

A little to please everyone, not enough for anyone

Interesting characters, and a good story. But it waffles between being an entertaining escapist yarn involving samurai and mystic ninjas and political intrigue, and a dull historical romance about two star-crossed lovers fighting the cruel bonds of blah blah blah. In audio, it's much harder to skim over the dull bits.
The second book in the series switches almost entirely to dull historical romance. I think. I didn't finish it when nothing happened in the first two-thirds of the book.
