Historia
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Not sure what stood out
Revisado: 02-13-25
A bit disappointing. I felt like there must have been lots of chapters left out. Skipped about and sometimes seemed repeated. Yet I wanted to find out what was the secret of the grandma. Hours lost.

Historia
Until 1971, life was good for mild-mannered accountant John List. He was vice president of a Jersey City bank and had moved his mother, wife, and three teenage children into a 19-room home in Westfield, New Jersey. But all that changed when he lost his job. Raised by his Lutheran father to believe success meant being a good provider, List saw himself as an utter failure. Straining under financial burdens, the stress of hiding his unemployment, as well as the fear that the free-spirited 1970s would corrupt the souls of his children, List came to a shattering conclusion.

Wow… I was alive but young when this happened and I guess I never heard about it. Can’t believe I didn’t hear it 18 years later either. Makes you a bit more afraid of the nice guys.

What a life for a child to grow up in. It most broke my heart hearing of how there was zero stability in her childhood. Not being able to stay in one place, develop long lasting relationships, have teachers who knew her home life and cared for her was tumultuous. Her mother’s endless reactions of anger about every little thing taught her no patience in figuring out solutions to life’s challenges. Mom needed major counseling!
Remarkably she has done a lot of work to make a more settled life for her girls, even if it meant exposing herself to the public. I feel for her greatly. I have never watched one of these shows…just landed on the book and listened to her side of everything.

Historia
The epic true story of an extreme athlete, a stray dog, and how they found each other—now a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Mark Walhberg and Simu Liu. When you're racing 435 miles through the jungles and mountains of South America, the last thing you need is a stray dog tagging along. But that's exactly what happened to Mikael Lindnord, captain of a Swedish adventure racing team, when he threw a scruffy but dignified mongrel a meatball one afternoon.

Sports book
Revisado: 03-07-24
I am not a major sports person. I really thought I was going to hear an uplifting story about a dog. I gave up on chapter 5 when a dog had only been mentioned in a sentence or two a couple of times. I just couldn’t listen to anymore race
Details again. I don’t know how many more
Chapters it would take. I guess I’d rather watch Mark Wahlberg play this one on screen.

Historia
Josef Fritzl was a 73-year-old retired engineer in Austria. He seemed to be living a normal life with his wife, Rosemarie, and their family - though one daughter, Elisabeth, had decades earlier been "lost" to a religious cult. Throughout the years, three of Elisabeth's children mysteriously appeared on the Fritzls' doorstep; Josef and Rosemarie raised them as their own. But only Josef knew the truth about Elisabeth's disappearance.... For 27 years, Josef had imprisoned and molested Elisabeth in his man-made basement dungeon.

What a story
Revisado: 01-24-24
Astounding story of the continuing effects of war and family trauma. I was surprised to learn that I was the same age as Elisabet and that I was only miles from her torture chamber just weeks after she was locked away. I imagined loosing that much of my life in such horror. How on earth could you ever get past it and move on. The evil in the human race is unfathomable.
I hope that this case changed laws in Austria about the length of sentences and stacking for numerous crimes.
Concerning the writing of the book. There was lots of repetition. Sometimes I thought Audible had skipped backwards, but many times there were actual repeats of the same facts, not just a reminders. And they certainly could have said “the house”, “the cellar” or “the mental hospital” and such instead of the annoying address each time. That was my only complaint but it was an interesting story that I had never even caught wind of through history.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Great explanation & summary
Revisado: 10-17-23
Thank you sweet Jill for opening up and telling the story. I am just a fan but stay concerned for each of you and what you have been through. I’m glad you have your amazing husband beside you to navigate truth and freedom from made up constraints. Press on, keep up the good fight …this too shall pass. You are strong. Great job writing and keeping things in check. I could feel your pain in your words and hope for the days when it will be further behind you.

Simple story line. Nothing too intense. (Maybe since I have experienced so much more) but… nothing that gets your heart or guts in a tailspin. Listened while I was gardening so it was a nice way to pass that time.

I was enticed enough to listen through
Revisado: 06-10-23
I agree with readers who said it repeated itself a good bit. Almost like the do on tv after a commercial … they play the same part again. And yes, the readers voice was gruff and had little inflection. Spoiler alert…Concerning Katie… of course she did… she thought she could take advantage of Adam’s sadness to bring him back again. She just wanted to conquer and destroy him for breaking her heart (if there is one) at times.

When Sandra Leigh was seven years old, she fell into the role of protector of her mother and three younger siblings. One winter night, she ushered her mother out of the house during one of her father’s tirades, and then snuck her back into the dark home through a window. Sandra was used to events like these; what she wasn’t used to were the mountains and nature surrounding her new home in West Virginia.

Really Enjoyed.
Revisado: 06-07-23
First of all, Sandra, reading the book sounds exactly like Kristin Chenoweth!! I see the naysayers but I feel opposite. I am very close in age to the writer. I could visualize everything from those time periods. I could do marine the world she was living in. Hearing it in the voice of a child was quite amazing. It makes you consider all of the questions children never have answered, their unspoken worries, their sadness for being held back from the truth. This was very much life in those years being raised by the Silent Generation. I was thrilled with the ending. I enjoyed it.

Kinda nice to have a short listen. I would not have guessed what happened in the end. I enjoyed the easy time frame after I have listened to numerous long books that ended up not being too great.
