Historia
If the Bible isn’t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it? What do people mean when they say the Bible is inspired? When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking these questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered changed her—and it will change you too.
Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. Undaunted by the Bible’s most difficult passages, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating Scripture’s mysteries. The Bible, she discovers, is not a static work but is a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God’s loving and redemptive work in the world.

Historia
Sarah Bessey was in her sweet spot: a popular author, sought-after speaker and preacher, and an active and engaged mother of four, married to the love of her life. Raised within the Word of Faith and prosperity movements, which declared that obedience to God led to untold blessings, her life seemed to prove the preachers of her childhood were right. Then she was in a car accident with life-shattering consequences, and everything she thought she knew about God and faith was upended. Sarah tells us the whole story of the car accident that changed her body and changed her life.

good, but not groundbreaking

it felt like there were more words than there was meaning-making. It's lovely and well-written, and it may just be that I've read too much of the same recently, but I didn't receive much in the way of new insight here.

Historia
Sixty-five million adults in the US have dropped out of active church attendance, and about 2.7 million more are leaving every year. Faith After Doubt is for the millions of people around the world who feel that their faith is falling apart. Using his own story and the stories of a diverse group of struggling believers, Brian D. McLaren, a former pastor and now an author, speaker, and activist, shows how old assumptions are being challenged in nearly every area of human life, not just theology and spirituality.

Helpful for Faith Leaders
Revisado: 06-07-22
It's a pretty heady/academic book.
Part 1: **
Part 2: ****
Part 3: *****
It gets better as it goes! Part 1 felt especially slow, in part because I was already intuitively familiar with the material. I don't know that the book is interesting enough narratively to engage many lay groups, but it is not only interesting but also important for faith leaders. Understanding the stages of doubt/faith as McLaren presents them can engender greater compassion for those at stages different than one's own, and that is always worthwhile. There are also some valuable reflections on raising children through the stages with an inclination towards love that will equip them to progress at their own pace towards a "Stage 4" faith.

It’s hard to give up on the feeling that the life you really want is just out of reach. A beach body by summer. A trip to Disneyland around the corner. A promotion on the horizon. Everyone wants to believe that they are headed toward good, better, best. But what happens when the life you hoped for is put on hold indefinitely?

Familiar Truths
Revisado: 06-05-22
It's not quite as tender as Everything Happens. That's not a good thing, and it's not a bad thing; it just is. I remember thinking after Everything Happens that there wasn't a whole lot of answers at the end, a whole lot of hope. "Answers" still doesn't exactly capture what Kate Bowler brings here, but it comes a lot closer. It's more settled, less lost. And while some of the stories are familiar and some of the quotes old friends, they are words worth hearing again. No Cure for Being Human is an honest look at where we are now, and how to *be,* as best we can.

one woman one act play
Revisado: 03-20-22
It made me laugh; it made me weep. My mom was a public school teacher for over twenty years. Several friends of mine are public school teachers now. Sun captures both what is demoralizing and what is inspiring about teaching public school, particularly in underfunded areas. The characters that Sun portrays are dynamic and distinct - I would have been impressed to hear that a whole cast performed the show; to hear that Sun performed the whole thing solo? Incredible.

a classic for a reason
Revisado: 03-20-22
I've read Animal Farm before, but this was a spectacular rendition. The introduction was well written and insightful, adding to an already five star work. I was particularly struck this time by the blatant disregard for truth from Squealer - the media - and the snowball effect (no pun intended) that had on the animals' perception of the world and their understanding of truth. Lies can be insidious, particularly when they come from a source we trust.

"marketing your instagram"
Revisado: 03-17-22
The majority of this book seems concerned with monetizing content on Instagram, especially lifestyle, fashion, or beauty content.
YouTube is sort of tangential to her advice, and the genre of YouTube I'm personally interested in - video essayists/educational YouTube - is completely outside the scope of her conversation. Additionally, this book is very much about the personal brand, so for those working to build their company's brand or their non-profit's brand, or for those hoping to monetize other kinds of online content - gaming, education, podcasts, etc. - this may not be the book for you.
There's still value here, especially with regards to the business end of things, including the modeling of professional communications and advice on finding a trustworthy agent, and Hennessy offers a unique and helpful perspective as someone who hires content creators and knows what she's looking for - and what she isn't. I knew this industry was difficult, but I hadn't realized just how cutthroat it could be on the business end. There's not much room for grace, at least as Hennessy describes it. She's definitely business-first and no-nonsense, and she seems to assume that being a content creator is and should be the number one priority of content creators - over and above work/life balance, family, and rest. Especially given the number of creators struggling with burnout in recent years, that assumption can be dangerous. Some of the influencer spotlights (where creators shared their perspectives in their own words) did help to moderate the single-minded and overwhelming dedication advocated for by Hennessy.
