Hudson Powell had always been a drifter, but after his father died, he vowed to turn his life around. He quit freelancing as a starship pilot and joined the Relic Guardian Force as a 38-year-old rookie. That was a big mistake. The RGF police the alien wrecks that have been found on every portal world discovered in the last century. They make sure the relic hunters pay taxes on the priceless alien tech they scavenge from the hulks. The snag is that the RGF is corrupt. And Hudson’s training officer Logan Griff is the worst scumbag of the lot.

If you are into lawful good protagonist

DESPITE everything, it was enjoyable

The story itself is really fun and interesting, but the writing relies on a lot on the authors favorite words and/or phrases. I could play a drinking game around the number of times the word DESPITE comes up. It also has a lot of the same foils multiple times in each book, which just gets old. The characters all have their own life and spirit, and are really well-defined, but the narrator is problematic. He has a high nasaly voice, so when he tries to do a nasaly voice, or any kind of voice, it's just hardl to listen to. I think the story is top notch but there's so many issues with everything else that I just can't give it 4*
If you can buy it on sale, it's a really good series with a lot of fantastic world-building and characters, but it also lacks in other things that make it hard to fully enjoy.

This is my favorite audio book ever, hands-down, and I love and cherish it with fierce and undying conviction. I prefer going into books "cold" (knowing as little as possible), so I will definitely not say much more than it is written so incredibly well, and that Ray Porter needs to narrate my life. I also never knew I could love a giant rock to the point that it made me cry. Just writing this review makes me want to listen to it again for the.... uh... Nth time? Shh, no one is counting.

Dennis E. Taylor and Ray Porter are, like, the most amazing powerhouse duo to happen to sci-fi (IMHO). DT's writing is always so fun, intelligent, and engaging; and Ray's narrations absolutely bring the characters and stories to vivid life. I wasn't really sure what I was getting myself into with this novel (I bought this audio book solely because I loved the Bobiverse series so much, and Ray's voice is like aural butter in my ears), but after an amusing and farcical start, it truly unraveled into an entertaining, nail-biting, and, most importantly, HILARIOUS, journey that twists and turns and which wildly deviated from any kind of preconceived notions I held in my tiny little human brain. Any fan of sci-fi would be proud to make this an addition to their library. *waits patiently for a 2nd book with fingers crossed*
