Better for new artists and aspiring activists
Revisado: 02-11-23
Honestly I’m very disappointed. I heard the author on a podcast and thought that what she shared there showed insight and value. I’ve been successfully creating and selling my art full time for 20 yrs. However I have my inner struggles and can get distracted by the next idea easily. I had hope to take a way a few nuggets of wisdom to enhance my creative life. Initially I felt this book was aimed at new unsteady artists as most information seemed basic and said a thousand times like “show up, practice every day, save money for taxes, put your work out there as it may never feel perfect enough”. However the book quickly became a how to for aspiring activists and those disgruntled with the Trump administration.
If I wanted a book on activism or wanted to hear people complain about Trump I only need to go on Facebook. I left finding no value at all in this work for an artist who has more than a little time producing and selling their work.

So beautiful!!!
Revisado: 12-15-22
I have followed Asia for quite a while and her writing has always been so wonderful. This book is truly wonderful and I bought a hard copy as well. I will say that the writing style of this book is very much like Robin Wall Kimmerer’s style. Part experiential story, part history, but all very centered in loving the earth. Her narration is equally beautiful.

Meh…
Revisado: 10-27-21
I’m personally super disappointed. I was looking for a new book under Hawaiian Spirituality and this came up. Although the author touches on his experiences “amazing experiences” in Hawaii (eventually) this book is a hodgepodge of everything and nothing at all. I feel like he is regurgitating everything he has ever learned and read on the most superficial level. The author admits that different sections are straight from other author’s work with their permission. I feel like he tries to tackle everything from finding your purpose, to yoga and meditation, the law of attraction, shamanism, and on to his coaching. If you didn’t know anything about these subjects this may be a great broad reaching overview to dip your toe in, but if you already have a basic knowledge of any of these things I recommend passing this one by. He speaks about some interactions with Hawaiian healers, but always basic with very little info except to say they made an impact on his life. He couldn’t even pronounce the names some of these honored Hawaiian teachers/healers. My only other issue is that English is the author’s
second language and he is very difficult to understand at times. I think he should have had someone else narrate.

From the founder and activist behind one of the largest movements of the 20th and 21st centuries, the "me too" movement, Tarana Burke debuts a powerful memoir about her own journey to saying those two simple yet infinitely powerful words - me too - and how she brought empathy back to an entire generation in one of the largest cultural events in American history.

You really must get this book!
Revisado: 10-15-21
Our worlds are different but similarities ran through some of the experiences. I’m grateful for this book. It opened me up to explore healing for myself. It opened my eyes to the very private lives and experiences of black and brown girls and women. As a woman and mother it saddens me deeply. I’m grateful for your strength and power to tell your story and be a bright light on such an ugly secret. Tarana narrates this book beautifully. It is raw, real and full of heart.

Drawing from her work as a psychoanalyst and cantadora (keeper of old stories), Dr. Estes uses myths and folktales to illustrate how societies systematically strip away the feminine spirit. Through an exploration into the nature of the wild woman archetype, Dr. Estes helps listeners rediscover and free their own wild nature.

Even better as an audio version
Revisado: 05-13-21
I have read this book twice and continue to come back to it at different stages of life. However, the audio version is the best. The author speaks to you as if she is having a conversation or telling a story that she is thinking of on the spot. It is by far the most beautiful performance of an audio book that I have ever listened to with Braiding Sweet Grass coming in second.

Historia
What happens when you realize you’ve had the career of your dreams, but you don’t have the life of your dreams? This was the stark reality facing Sheri Salata when she left her 20-year stint at The Oprah Winfrey Show, Harpo Studios, and the OWN network. She had dedicated decades to her dream job, and loved (almost) every minute of it, but had left the rest of her life gathering dust on the shelf. After years of telling other people’s makeover stories, Sheri decided to “produce” her own life transformation.

So much more than I expected!
Revisado: 03-06-21
I would consider myself fairly well read in the inspirational and self help department. I figured I would come away with a nugget or two of wisdom, but was overcome many times with how Sheri’s stories and lessons overlapped with my own, past and current. It was a lovely book to listen to.
