The smartest people read this, then live well.
Revisado: 04-21-24
This book is by and for smart people. (by many more than just Attia). In the same way saving and investing is by and for smart people.
Medical info is current, and the actionable suggestions are brilliantly moderate and reasonable. The approach is adaptive, inviting new information and personal differences to shape the interventions a person chooses, while providing base knowledge to help a person understand how to make new choices in the evolving landscape of data.

Historia
Spinoza's brilliant metaphysical system was derived neither from reality nor experience. Starting from basic assumptions, with a series of geometric proofs he built a universe which was also God, one and the same thing, the classic example of pantheism. Although his system seems an oddity today, Spinoza's conclusions are deeply in accord with modern thought, from science (the holistic ethics of today's ecologists) to politics (the idea that the state exists to protect the individual).

Avoid his book Ethics, read this instead
Revisado: 11-01-22
I was warned by a philosopher lawyer to avoid Spinoza's book, Ethics.
After devouring this summary, I can only agree with the philosopher lawyer. The book Ethics reads like a math proof, though without the beauty of associated symbols.
The author of this summary work includes plenty of humor to push one quickly through the less interesting moments of Spinoza's life, of which there were many.
Jokes can be made non-stop regarding the prevailing thoughts of Spinoza's time, and they are.
Don't waste your life, read this summary.

Why are some people so quick to recover from a setback while others wallow in despair? Why are some people so highly attuned to others that they seem psychic, while other people put both feet in it over and over again? Why are some people always up and others always down? In this hotly anticipated book, award-winning, pioneering neuroscientist Richard J. Davidson answers these questions by offering an entirely new model of our emotions - their origins, their power, and their malleability.

THE origin of Mindfulness research in the West!
Revisado: 10-30-22
Slow beginnings, with a riveting finish.
Though there is significant material of interest regarding all aspects of research and interventions presented, I found it especially rewarding to discover the history of the Dalai Lama's contribution to the West's research into how meditation helps people. This man shared significant interactions with the Dalai Lama in order to advance his research.
Hold out long enough and you'll get a prescriptive explanation for how to move various of your personality traits from one level of activation to another.
Context sensitivity, attentional awareness (both excess and deficiency), micro-facial expression awareness, compassion, obsessive compulsive behaviors, excessive pessimism or optimism.
All methods are simple applications of neuroscientific concepts with rigorous scientific publication. YOU CAN RETRAIN YOUR BRAIN!

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

5 stars from a US techy living in Germany
Revisado: 10-30-22
The "existential vacuum" of meaninglessness for today's privileged people is real. Mindfulness meditation as prescribed by Sam Harris is one good solution. I believe Victor Frankl holds another source of respite for those living through today's unbelievable era of efficiency, leisure, power, and production.
I'm a neuropharmacologist gone VR/AR simulations company co-founder (back in 2004). Life has been "successful", but the creep of this "existential vacuum" is something I feel as well. Frankl could have more or less predicted it.
This book provides context and clarity for considering the range of experiences I and others face now and in the future - whether that future is certain or uncertain.

Sufficient summary, impossible task.
Revisado: 10-29-22
I've read Behave, and now I've listened to this summary.
Summarizing all content in that very long and thorough book in 30 minutes is not just difficult, it's impossible.
There are a few parts left untouched in the summary, but it does hit most of the highlights. For instance, there is no mention of the neural streamlining due to the ways calories are sourced, which is the ultimate predictor of "individualist" vs "collectivist" personality types, as well as inland traders, the xenophobic pastoral farmers, coastal fishing groups, etc.
Anyone looking to understand the mysteries of human behavior in more detail should tackle the full volume.

Historia
Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

Discover your history, ignorance, and repetition.
Revisado: 10-28-22
The world is shown to be far more disorderly than a 20th century resident might assume, especially if born between the '60s and the 2000s. It is to these age groups I think this book is most important.
As peerless as Attenborough, Bryson highlights and organizes the dots, making connections that help us understand the fumbling nature of humans. By probability alone in a vastly populated mass, a few humans have persisted in throwing off dogmatism in favor of observation and testing (aka science). Others were at the right place at the right time.
One "happy accident" after another seems to have allowed humans to modernize.
The final point is that this modernization requires consumption of resources at hundreds of times that of previous rates per capita. These are only available to a few percent of the world. As populations strive for equality, resources become definitively unavailable.
Bryson hints that the next chapters of history may include less happiness and comfort.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Neil gaiman is brilliant in his storytelling, and his narration delivers on at least the same level. Characters are brought to life through his enchanted accounts of mythologies that have shaped the world through much of recorded western history.

Exceptional effort to present unbiased data
Revisado: 11-25-21
The effort here to avoid bias and expose bias in studies in order to assess current understandings of real world problems is astounding.
Sam Harris interviewed the author, which provided a brilliant glimpse into the "mating strategies of Earthlings." Reading this particular book illuminates the struggles that women face now and historically in that "strategic" landscape.
The insights in this book will help our if the right people are listening. --> Change makers/leaders, advocates, outspoken community members, or witnesses of men in the act of behaving badly can all look to this book for direction.

Historia
As it was in Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary, and Othello, so it is in life. Most forms of private vice and public evil are kindled and sustained by lies. Acts of adultery and other personal betrayals, financial fraud, government corruption - even murder and genocide - generally require an additional moral defect: a willingness to lie. In Lying, bestselling author and neuroscientist Sam Harris argues that we can radically simplify our lives and improve society by merely telling the truth in situations where others often lie.

The truth about lies 🙂
How do they affect the person telling them?
How does the person telling them change in their relationship to the receiver of the lie?
Lying is certainly a product of the survival mechanisms that are associated with the ego. Like the ego, lying is much less useful than IT would have us believe.

When does enlightenment come? At the end of the spiritual journey? Or the beginning? In After the Ecstasy, the Laundry, Jack Kornfield brings into focus the truth about satori, the awakened state of consciousness, and enlightenment practices today. The result is this extraordinary look at the hard work we all must do - the laundry - no matter how often we experience ecstatic states of consciousness through meditation and other disciplines.

Conclusion: "existence is tolerable"- explained!
Revisado: 10-06-21
For beginners, intermediates, and experts, it is helpful to explore the peak and rock bottom experiences of those most experienced along a shared path. Even more helpful, it is worth noting the nearly identical arc of experience through that process/path that is shared by even the most experienced.
This recognition helps the reader accept that the apparently idiosyncratic nature of existence really is idiosyncratic, ephemeral, non-intuitive, partly explainable, and in the end - tolerable.
We find in the summary stories of the historically significant practitioners that our reality does not prevent, but supports, an entirely contented existence alongside our experience JUST as it is.
