Fun Characters and Enjoyable Writing

This series has the same witty writing and engaging first person point of view as Lily Clairet. The surprisingly introspective descriptions of the world from the comically mislead protagonist are a constant delight, and the way the supporting cast of characters interacts with the absurd pompousness of the princess protagonist leaves you feeling humored and in good spirits in many places where other authors would have leaned into more negative emotions.

As with the first book, Lily Clairet is just doing her best to survive high school, but her nosey, meddlesome friends and penchant for encountering wild personalities makes for a book even more enjoyable than the first. The writing is colorful and creative. The situations are as absurd as they are relatable. I desperately hope they keep bringing the series to audible.

I normally don’t like books read by more than one person. They tend to feel like they’re trying too hard or something of the sort. That is not the case here. The full cast does a wonderful job of bringing the story to life, and I enjoyed listening to them as much as I’ve enjoyed any audiobook performance.

The story was much more psychological than I expected, and the irreverence displayed by the characters as they quipped back and forth amid talk of monsters, emotions, and what it means to be alive had me laughing, thinking, and crying in equal measure.

Excellent Slice of Life

Lily Clairet is the epitome of what slice of life writing can be. The main character’s internal dialogue is hilarious, and the imagery used to describe her emotions and reactions to the world happening around her had me wanting to write down quotes constantly. There are some problems with the audio very early on (a little skipping), but they do not persist, and both the book and the performance made for a wonderful 9 hours. Absolutely incredible work. I will be buying the light novels to keep hearing about Lily’s exasperated waltz through high school immediately.
