Historia
Tom Perrotta's thirtysomething parents of young children are a varied and surprising bunch. There's Todd, the handsome stay-at-home dad dubbed "The Prom King" by the moms of the playground; Sarah, a lapsed feminist with a bisexual past, who seems to have stumbled into a traditional marriage; Richard, Sarah's husband, who has found himself more and more involved with a fantasy life on the Internet than with the flesh and blood in his own house; and Mary Ann, who thinks she has it all figured out.

Great book & narration
Revisado: 01-30-05
I like this book because its fresh and it covers the topic of adultery with real emotion and humor. I think cheating on your spouse is wrong, but I found myself sympathizing with the lead mom. I like that the author shows her flaws as well as those of other moms in the neighborhood who seem to have everything going for them.
The book has suspense with a strange happening towards the end. I didn't expect that, but the author did a good job tying it into the story.
The narration is done so well. I wish more audio books were like this one!

Dupont University: the Olympian halls of learning housing the cream of America's youth, the roseate Gothic spires and manicured lawns suffused with tradition....Or so it appears to beautiful, brilliant Charlotte Simmons, a sheltered freshman from North Carolina, who has come here on full scholarship. But Charlotte soon learns, to her mounting dismay, that for the upper-crust coeds of Dupont, sex, Cool, and kegs trump academic achievement every time.

Too much hype
Revisado: 01-30-05
I must have unrealistic expectations based on other reviews I've seen because this book is boring. The story is predictable and in my opinion follows the typical stereotypes of jocks and geeks we've seen over and over.
When I heard that the author spent months visiting college towns all over the country to get into the mindset of young students, I couldn't believe this book was the result of such intense research. I cringe out of embarrassment that the author thinks he captured the feelings and behaviors of an 18 year old.

Touching and emotional
Revisado: 01-30-05
This is a great book about the debate of how far a person should go to save another life. I like that the author doesn't really pick a side but rather shows the various motivations and feelings of her characters. That makes them more real and its hard not to think about what I would do in this situation.
The only thing I didn't care for in this book is the love story between the lawyer and Anna's legal representative. That was too corny for my taste.

Excellent writing, story is good too
Revisado: 01-06-05
I thought the best part of this audio book is how beautiful the writing is. Luckily the narration is great or I might not have picked up on it (or been too annoyed to notice).
The story is fascinating and makes you wonder about the 5 people in your life.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

One of the best I've heard so far!
Revisado: 01-06-05
I highly recommend listening to this one. I rarely come across an audio book that has all three of the right elements: Excellent narration, compelling plot and characters, and the ability to make me not want to stop listening!
I especially found the recent historical events (like the Taliban) an interesting and authentic part of the story.

Excellent story - didn't want it to end!
Revisado: 07-03-04
I very much enjoyed this audio book. What I like best is the richness of the story. The author does an excellent job connecting readers to her characters. I didn't want the story to end!
I have to admit it took a while to get used to the narrator. She happens to be one of the best actresses around but I thought she did a mediocre job at narrating. Once I got used to her style, I was able to tune out the "stiffness" of her voice and concentrate on the story.
I would love to see a follow-on to this book, maybe Lucia's life after her 20's??

Great suspense - not much of an ending
Revisado: 07-03-04
I enjoyed almost every minute of this audio book. The narrator is excellent. She makes you believe she's from 19th century England.
The suspense is great and keeps you wanting to listen. But beware - the ending is bland. But its still worth a listen.

In his newest collection of essays, David Sedaris lifts the corner of ordinary life, revealing the absurdity teeming below its surface. His world is alive with obscure desires and hidden motives, a world where forgiveness is automatic and an argument can be the highest form of love. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is another unforgettable collection from one of the wittiest and most original writers at work today.

Funny life stories
Revisado: 07-03-04
David Sedaris is an excellent story teller. He did a very good job narrating his own book, which is always a risk as this doesn't always work out well for authors. I very much enjoyed his book.
The reason I rated this a 4 and not a 5 is the really long comedy show near the end of the book. It threw me off track as it feels like I'm smack in the middle of a late-night comedy show (complete with drunken laughs and hoots). I wonder if they wanted to add more time to the audio as it takes up almost an hour of it!

Historia
It may be difficult to imagine a life-affirming book which begins with the main character, a 14-year-old girl, recounting her rape and murder, but Alice Sebold's debut novel is just such a book. Having received advance critical acclaim that before now was reserved only for literary giants, this book will no doubt invite comparisons to works such as Tracy Chevalier's The Girl with the Pearl Earring and Toni Morrison's Beloved.

Touching story
Revisado: 04-05-04
I like this book because it was a unique story. I was drawn to the idea that ghosts stay around their loved ones, just sort of watching life. The reader does an excellent job and makes it an easy listen.
The only thing I wish the author did is add some revenge against the main character's murderer. If she had added this, I would have rated this audio book higher.

Revisado: 03-18-04
I was very excited after reading other people's reviews and thought I was in for something great. That never happened - in fact I struggled through the first couple of hours and finally cut my losses and stopped listening. This book is boring and not funny.
