(Keke girl, love you but you’re killin’ me smalls with those hashtags)

I wanted to listen to this book before getting to Master of Me as I am predicting the next one will be much more evolved with a 5+ year gap from this one and her latest life milestones. The book title saying “quiet the noise and find your voice” gave the impression that this book would be a guide of some sort and less of a memoir. If the title had incorporated “finding my voice”, I believe it would have had a different effect, going into the book knowing it was more of a memoir from which I could take nuggets of knowledge as opposed to thinking it was more self-help focused. Listening to the audiobook narrated by Keke herself, provided some additional context and personality to her perspective as opposed to reading it, hearing my inner voice in my head. While the excessive use of hashtag language was distracting at times, there is still plenty of value to take from her experiences in my opinion. I may consider re-listening for the purposes of going into it with less expectation of guidance and more of just a memoir that I can take what resonates, leave the rest. Hashtag change your perspective, can’t believe I just said that but if you experienced this book, you’ll get it. Looking forward to Master of Me!

When I first saw this book recommended I thought that the title was bold and that I wanted to learn of a different perspective than my own. I had hopes that maybe I’d relate to some of the experiences being a Latina, as often times our black and brown brothers/sisters have shared the same oppressor. In the beginning I thought accountability was lacking and that some moments were heavily glossed over to which I experienced mental whiplash. Overall, not sure what it was that didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for being “good” but I recommend that people give it a shot and form their own opinions without heavily relying on reviews. Also, sometimes things aren’t always good or bad, they just are. Her experiences were her own and sometimes it is what it is, if you take anything of value from her experiences then that’s a bonus.

I struggled at times to keep up with the amount of perspectives/characters (ex. “who the heck is Karl or Bill and why should I care?”) but I would without a doubt listen/read this again just to experience the emotion of the last chapter. I pictured my own family members while putting myself in the shoes of the character who shall not be named in the last chapter and it ripped me apart. As a fan of time travel movies and books I would definitely recommend giving this one a shot.

Just like there is music for different moods, there are meditations for different levels and approaches. This was different than what I’m used to from popular apps that are often “one-size-fits-all” but I enjoyed the pace of this one.

I eventually stopped listening to the audiobook, instead read the book to myself & created voices in my head for the characters.
I had access to this book & audiobook via Kindle Unlimited. Would recommend the book just not this audiobook.

Loved this one a lot! The poem at the end made me cry, I listened to it twice and it resonated deeply. Thank you!

Great visualization of moving from the passenger seat to the driver seat. Will be incorporating that in my meditations as well as any anxious moments where things feel chaotic or out of my control. Thanks Mel!
