Historia
Forty-something Defiance Dayne only recently discovered she comes from a long line of powerful witches. Added to that was the teensy, infinitesimal fact that she is what's called a charmling. One of three on the entire planet. And there are other witches who will stop at nothing to steal her immense power, which would basically involve her unfortunate and untimely death.

Part 2 of ‘this is not a book’
Revisado: 08-16-23
In my review for the first book I said that it was the first third of one book that had been randomly split up in order to charge more for it.
Turns out that was too generous. I’m now certain that even the trilogy won’t constitute an actual book. There are characters, and they do stuff until DJ decides she has enough words, then it cuts off and a new ‘book’ begins.

Barely half a book - ends in the middle of a conversation
Revisado: 08-13-23
Ridiculous to have this as an individual book - it’s the back story beginning of a book. It’s entertaining, but I imagine the 3 books I’m paying for separately are just 1 book broken up for the cash grab.

blah
Revisado: 05-27-13
Would you try another book from T. A. Pratt and/or Jessica Almasy?
Marla is an interesting character, but the book had no real plot or purpose and I felt no sympathy or affinity to her. I'll probably give the 2nd book a shot to see if it picks up now that she has established her characters.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I like the sorcery, and the fact that it was something Marla had to work hard to learn.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She puts an odd inflection on things that do not need it and pauses to much between words.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Perhaps this will set up the series so that the other books can move smoothly.

Historia
Charley sees dead people. That's right, she sees dead people. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

Disturbing, and not in a good way
Revisado: 05-17-13
Would you try another book from Darynda Jones and/or Lorelei King?
The upside to this book is hearing Lorelei King again and the supernatural set up had potential, but the plot really revolved around Charley's obsession with a guy that molested and threatened to rape her when she was 15. Not Cool. So all of the "romance" made me gag and squirm uncomfortably.
I'm not sure if I will read any more of this series - if I do it will be because Lorelei King is my favorite narrator.
Has First Grave on the Right turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, just from this author.
Did First Grave on the Right inspire you to do anything?
Gag? And teach girls that rape and being held against your will isn't sexy.

Rachel's still stupid as ever, not doing a thing
Revisado: 01-22-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not, my friends and I are law enforcement/fighter types and it's too damn annoying listening to Rachel f-up every single time she's attacked. She has ridiculously great weapons and she just freezes and lets the bad guys beat the crap out of her. I can not believe she is supposed to be a trained 'runner'. Kim Harrison can write, but Tink's titties she definitely isn't a fighter. Or even a watcher of Law and Order episodes....The play between the characters is good though, and I'm invested enough in the gang to keep listening. Rachel does seem to be getting better with her choices - not good - but better, and that makes the book much less irritating that some of the others. Honestly, I always think that Rachel deserves the painful situations she gets into and I don't care about her survival all that much. I do love all of the support characters though, and I listen to the books largely to see what happens with them.
What do you think your next listen will be?
*sigh* I'm sure it will be the next in the series. Finishing a series is a compulsion, and I have to get unbelievably bored or upset not to finish one. In fact, it has only happened once.
What about Marguerite Gavin’s performance did you like?
She is great at giving life to the characters, though I will say that she messed up her voices a few times in this book. She would get confused maybe and say a line in the wrong voice before realizing who was supposed to be talking and switch over.
Was A Perfect Blood worth the listening time?
I'm not sure.

Rachel Morgan is a runner with the Inderland Runner Services, apprehending law-breakers throughout Cincinnati. She's also a witch, one of the many Inderlanders who revealed themselves after a genetically engineered virus wiped out 50 percent of humanity. Witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves: the creatures of dreams and nightmares have lived beside humans for centuries, hiding their powers. But now they've stopped hiding, and nothing will be the same.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Probably not.
Would you be willing to try another book from Kim Harrison? Why or why not?
I'm reading the whole series, the characters are addictive. My problem is that Rachel is a flaming idiot. I spend half the time yelling at her or thinking that she really deserves to die for making such inane choices. I love Ivy, Janks and the rest - but be warned; your favorite characters in this series are not safe. People do die in some of the books.

Even the town's only Goth is still wearing eyeliner. But just as Jace is about to click her heels and hightail out of there, she's roped into a brand-new case. Somebody is possessed. And the bodies are piling up....

It's good......for half a book.
Revisado: 09-26-12
What did you love best about Waking the Witch?
Getting to know Savannah as a complex, adult character.
Would you recommend Waking the Witch to your friends? Why or why not?
Maybe, but I'm pretty pissed that I now have to pay another 20 bucks to find out what happens. The story doesn't wrap up, major things are just left hanging. It's like a tv season finale, but instead of having a big 2 hour finale she just wrote half the story and then sold it as a full book. It's much shorter than the others without even finishing the story. I'm so mad right now that I don't even want to buy any more of her books, although I am too attached to this series not to buy the last 2. I think I'll move on to another writer after this though.
What about Johanna Parker’s performance did you like?
She did a good job.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
