Historia
They have always scared him in the past - the Rangers, with their dark cloaks and shadowy ways. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now 15-year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't yet realize is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing.

Slow to get going, but worth it
Revisado: 07-29-23
This is a solid start to the Ranger's Apprentice series. It's enjoyable throughout, with interesting settings and characters, though it is a little slow to get going. While I did enjoy it, I didn't really get into the book until a few hours in. That said, once it did pick up, I finished it quickly. I look forward to listening to more books in the series.

As good as the original series
Revisado: 12-11-22
This collection of short (and one not-so-short) stories is such an amazing addition to the Wingfeather Saga. A wonderful compliment to the original series of books that builds upon and rewards readers of that series with characters, stories, and lands hinted at in Andrew Peterson's quadrilogy.

Historia
Sir Charles Cartwright should have known better than to allow 13 guests to sit down for dinner. For at the end of the evening one of them is dead - choked by a cocktail that contained no trace of poison. Predictable, says Hercule Poirot, the great detective. But entirely unpredictable is that he can find absolutely no motive for murder.…

Poirot is a Secondary Character
Revisado: 03-17-22
For a Hercule Poirot book, Three Act Tragedy features the detective very little. He is in less than half of the book, and the story suffers because of it. The other (lead) characters are not near as compelling as Poirot, and their discoveries lack the intrigue of Poirot's. The story is saved by Poirot's greater involvement in the final act, and the twist is a good one--but it all could have been so much better if the story didn't plod along following characters other than the world-famous detective.

It is led by the Nine Ruling Families, whose leadership stands as a bulwark of stability against the Chaos of the Unknown Regions. But that stability has been eroded by a cunning foe who winnows away trust and loyalty in equal measure. Bonds of fidelity have given way to lines of division among the families. Despite the efforts of the Expansionary Defense Fleet, the Ascendancy slips closer and closer to civil war.

A Satisfying Conclusion to the Ascendancy Trilogy
Revisado: 02-05-22
Timothy Zahn has created a thoroughly enjoyable universe with believable characters, interesting mysteries, political intrigue, and action-packed battles. Learning more about Thrawn's backstory and motivations is great, and Marc Thompson does an excellent job of voicing both him and all the other characters in the book. Overall, this is a very satisfying conclusion to the Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy, and we'll worth the listen both for fans of the character and newcomers alike--though do yourself a favor and listen to the rest of Zahn's Thrawn books first. They will not disappoint.

Slow to Start, but Intriguing
Revisado: 03-22-21
The book is a slow burn, for sure. It didn't seem like things really got going until over halfway through. That said, if you stick with it, the story is pretty good. The new characters are interesting and the ending makes me curious for what this new series will bring to the Star Wars universe.

Revealing Thrawn's Past
Revisado: 09-19-20
Thrawn has always been a mysterious figure--which is part of the attraction--and while this book removes a little of the mystery, it remains true to the character and leaves room for further mysteries to be explored. In addition to learning about Thrawn, readers learn more about other Chiss characters Zahn has introduced in previous books. Perhaps most interesting of all is the exploration of the Chiss Ascendancy, which has only been referenced in previous books.
Overall, this book was very satisfying, and I look forward to the others in this new trilogy. The characters are multi-dimensional, the setting is intriguing, the main conflict is compelling and explored in an interesting way, and Marc Thompson's narration is incredible; it's hard to believe all those voices come from one man.
If you're a fan of Thrawn, and even if you're not, I highly recommend this book!

An Epic End to a Fantastic Trilogy
Revisado: 09-03-20
The characters are believable and interesting, continuing to develop and grow as the story continues. The major conflict is epic and satisfying. The narrator is perfect for this book, delivering dialogue in an engaging way--you can picture everything clearly in your head as he speaks. On the whole, this is a fantastic book. I'd highly recommend both it and the trilogy it belongs to.
