Historia
When the United States was founded in 1776, its citizens didn’t think of themselves as “Americans.” They were New Yorkers or Virginians or Pennsylvanians. It was decades later that the seeds of American nationalism—identifying with one’s own nation and supporting its broader interests—began to take root. But what kind of nationalism should Americans embrace? The state-focused and racist nationalism of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson? Or the belief that the US Constitution made all Americans one nation, indivisible, which Daniel Webster and others espoused?

Fascinating and well written
Revisado: 03-28-23
This is a terrific American history book, and it’s very well produced as an audible book. It goes into many fascinating subjects about early 19th century American political history, all while staying interesting and plot driven. I think Joel Paul is one of the very best current popular historians, with a gift for narrative and character development, along with some serious points to make.

Historia
The conventional wisdom about Felix Frankfurter―Harvard law professor and Supreme Court justice―is that he struggled to fill the seat once held by Oliver Wendell Holmes. Scholars have portrayed Frankfurter as a judicial failure, a liberal lawyer turned conservative justice, and the Warren Court’s principal villain. And yet none of these characterizations rings true.

Panoramic and deep
Revisado: 12-24-22
Wow, what an amazing judicial biography. It’s so comprehensive and interesting the whole way. The theme is also so pertinent to our times. Brad Snyder is a masterful biographer. I am a lawyer, so of course this is a particularly interesting to me, but I think anyone interested in the sweep of ideas through the 20th century would find this very engaging.

Historia
Thaddeus Stevens was among the first to see the Civil War as an opportunity for a second American revolution - a chance to remake the country as a genuine multiracial democracy. As one of the foremost abolitionists in Congress in the years leading up to the war, he was a leader of the young Republican Party’s radical wing, fighting for anti-slavery and anti-racist policies long before party colleagues like Abraham Lincoln endorsed them. These policies - including welcoming black men into the Union’s armies - would prove crucial to the Union war effort.

Intelligent and add new insights to the discourse
Revisado: 11-19-21
I highly recommend this audiobook. The author knows what he’s talking about and presents a new and original perspective on the very important issues connected with Thaddeus Steven’s role in reconstruction.
The narrator is excellent too

Historia
When Catherine Raven finished her PhD in biology, she built herself a tiny cottage on an isolated plot of land in Montana. She was as emotionally isolated as she was physically, but she viewed the house as a way station, a temporary rest stop where she could gather her nerves and fill out applications for what she hoped would be a real job that would help her fit into society. In the meantime, she taught remotely and led field classes in nearby Yellowstone National Park. Then one day she realized that a mangy-looking fox was showing up on her property every afternoon at 4:15 p.m.

Wonderful if you like . . .
Revisado: 10-15-21
This was a wonderful experience but probably not for everyone. The writer is quirky, brilliant — with strange mix of the lyrical and analytic and extremely original The pace is slow with a gentle, faint plot. The story is tiny and at the same time about massive questions regarding the relationship between the human and natural worlds. I was so sad when the book ended and hope Raven will publish more soon

A bit too maudlin
Revisado: 11-12-20
The reader is good and the setting has such potential but the middle of the book is too maudlin and many of the main character’s problems are too predictable.
