Historia
Ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off a bad case of midlife malaise when he is called to a sleepy Yorkshire town, and the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. But one theft leads to another, including the disappearance of a valuable Turner from Burton Makepeace, home to Lady Milton and her family. Once a magnificent country house, Burton Makepeace has now partially been converted into a hotel, hosting Murder Mystery weekends.

Yes, he's back!
Revisado: 10-06-24
I feel I've waited forever for another Jackson Brodie so can be excused for devouring this new book from the masterful Kate
Atkinson. I could have done with a bit more Brodie but the many other characters are superbly drawn and brilliantly brought
to life by the narrator Jason Isaacs. He should really take a bow. Several curtain calls in fact. One of the best performances I've heard. There's more amusement than suspense but definitely worth a credit.

Yet Strike discovers that beneath the surface there are deeply sinister undertones, and unexplained deaths. In order to try to rescue Will, Strike's business partner Robin Ellacott decides to infiltrate the cult and she travels to Norfolk to live incognito amongst them. But in doing so, she is unprepared for the dangers that await her there or for the toll it will take on her.

I was the one being tortured.
Revisado: 01-31-24
I must start by saying I am a devotee of the Cormoran Strike books and the brilliant narration by Robert Glenister.
Unfortunately, this one left me cold. I felt I was being tortured along with all the other unfortunates. Why did it need to be so drawn out? And so grim. It was my fault - the publisher's blurb indicated this subject matter wasn't for me but I thought the usual, wonderful surrounding stuff would compensate. It didn't.

What he gets are four redneck deputies who want to run him out of town. Mistake. They're picking on the wrong guy. Jack Reacher is a big man, and he's in shape. No job, no address, no baggage. Nothing, except bloody-minded curiosity. What is the secret the locals seem so keen to hide?

Everything to lose.
Revisado: 04-06-23
I usually love Jack Reacher but this is a very boring story. Jack wanders around between a lot of nothing interrupted by the usual bits of biffo and cups of coffee. I had zero interest in what was actually going on and couldn't finish it. A first for me. Jeff Harding did his usual spectacular job but it was not enough to save this one.

Didn't know what day it was.
Revisado: 03-16-23
The unsolvable mystery in this book is how a story set in modern times can feel so firmly stuck in the 1930's. The narrator certainly gives it that flavour and so does the dialogue. It always comes as a shock when they drag out a mobile phone.
I did finish it but found the resolution unsatisfactory and for a brilliant detective it took the main guy a very long time to wonder about the obvious. The information that set him off in the right direction should have been a line of inquiry from the beginning. A frustrating book for experienced police procedural mystery readers.

Takes annoying to another place.
Revisado: 03-13-23
This was my first experience with this popular author and will probably be my last.
The main character was tooth-grindingly annoying. Very immature and quite pathetic.
I didn't wonder why her husband left her - just why he was there in the first place.

Not my favourite but still compelling
Revisado: 10-01-22
I'm not a great fan of hashtag writing - lots and lots of text given over to chats, emails etc. Even in the hands of a master it can get very tedious. But otherwise, lots to love about the Cormoran and Robyn plotline - their agency, their dysfunctional lives, their detecting instincts, their relationship (GET ON WITH IT). And the book does shine an important light on the ramifications for young women who have an online presence or put their heads above the parapet. The narrator, Robert Glenister is a very fine actor and does a cracking job here.

Beautifully written but not compelling.
Revisado: 08-26-22
This is very well written of course but the characters left me cold. All of them.
In fact, they're all a bit bonkers. And not in a fun way.
And as for God, I understand why He is inserted into everything but it's so tedious.
And apparently, this is the beginning of a trilogy! At the risk of falling into that trap, God save us.
I hung in there for 23 hours....couldn't be bothered finishing.

To escape the duke’s clutches, she’s going to need a little help. Captain Arthur Heywood’s days of heroism are long past. Solid (and a little bit of a stolid) effort.
Revisado: 06-09-22
All writers of romance want to be Georgette Heyer but of course, they can't possibly succeed.
Mimi Matthews has a fair crack and there's enough in this to keep you tuned in.
The main characters are a little tormented way past when they need to be but at least they're interesting.

Perhaps it me.
Revisado: 06-09-22
I think I must be getting tired of this series. For someone as whip-smart at solving murders, Siobhan acts like a complete ninny when things start to get personal...in this book at least. Her behaviour was incredibly annoying. Many reviews say this book is the best one yet but it's the last one for me.

Historia
Don’t miss the first novel in a gripping series featuring DI Clare Mackay, perfect for fans of Alex Gray, D. S. Butler and Rachel Amphlett. On the night of a wedding celebration, one guest meets a grisly end when he’s killed in a hit-and-run. A card bearing the number ‘five’ has been placed on the victim’s chest. DI Clare Mackay, who recently moved to join the St Andrews force, leads the investigation. The following night another victim is struck down and a number ‘four’ card is at the scene.

Deftly handled story.
Revisado: 06-09-22
I enjoyed the story and the characters but except for a few notable exceptions, writers should not narrate
their own books. They should not be encouraged to do so. Marion Todd does an OK job but her narration is flat and colourless - she might also have a cold.
Her narration doesn't do justice to her well-written story
