An unskippable superhero story

We're all familiar with the trope by now; the worlds most powerful superhero dies and the only person nearby at the time, a frightened teenager, is gifted with their powers and tasked with saving the world. Here's the twist: what if the teenager is a closeted trans girl, and what if gaining these powers also gives her the body she's always dreamed of? That's the pitch for Dreadnought. The characters are compellingly written, the stakes and experiences of its teenage protagonist is agonizingly real, and while the world of superheroes is by now surely familiar to most, April Daniels creates a world that till feels fresh and original, and Natasha Soudek brings it to life beautifully. I can't recommend this book enough to anyone who wants more superhero content in their lives, or who has been looking for a good coming of age story set from a trans lesbian perspective.

What an incredible trip. There's no third person narration in this edge-of-your-seat adventure, only tense dialogue, startled exclamations, and distinctive ~zap~ of las weaponry - among other, more alien and terrible sounds. While this may be a disorienting listening experience for someone new to the universe and the tensions that exist within its societies, for familiar fans and veterans of the lore, this will be an astoundingly fun trip that leaves you hungry for more.

Breathtaking action. Intricately interwoven subplots. Fleshed out, realistic characters. You couldn’t ask for a better work, but Abnett outdoes himself every time.
