Historia
Czechoslovakia, 1935: Viktor Kosárek, a newly trained psychiatrist who studied under Carl Jung, arrives at the infamous Hrad Orlu Asylum for the Criminally Insane. The facility is located in a medieval mountaintop castle surrounded by forests, on a site that is well known for concealing dark secrets going back many centuries. The asylum houses six inmates - the country's most treacherous killers - known to the terrified public as the Devil's Six. Viktor intends to use a new medical technique to prove that these patients share a common archetype of evil, a phenomenon he calls The Devil Aspect.

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

I enjoyed Dr. Fauci’s candor and detail as he shared the “then” with the “what we know now.”

Historia
Based on recorded history and family memories, the book chronicles Saadia's arranged marriage and hardships as a young mother to Wafa, a French-educated, sexually liberated Muslim woman, who traveled to Europe and then to America, reaching a top position on Wall Street—in theory, the fulfillment of her American dream but in reality an overwhelming experience that threatens everything she holds dear. Like the best of fiction, this is an intensely personal emotional rollercoaster tale full of twists and turns, which make it hard to put down.

Couldn't Endure Jerky, Oddly Punctuated Narration
Revisado: 05-23-24
I wanted to like this title. It is only the second book I have returned since signing up for Audible in 2008. I just could not continue past chapter 2. Be sure to listen to the entire sample before purchasing (something I usually do).

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Flat and Uninspiring Characters
Revisado: 05-10-24
While the novel may depict the professional difficulties women in the U.S. faced during the time in which it is set, the flat, inflexible, one dimensional characters ruined what may have been a compelling plot. The novel was a chore to read, and had it not been a book club selection, I would have probably set it aside. Hard to believe this title is a bestseller with glowing reviews.

There is too much to overlook in the depiction of life in the period for me, at least, to enjoy the storyline.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Redundant

Uninspiring narrative with a clever beginning and plot. The protagonist never develops in character, and it was hard to root for her. Last pages, however, did tie up the loose ends.

Historia
The only person who might have the answers to a baffling murder case is the victim's seven-year-old daughter, found hiding in the room where her mother died. And she's not talking. Newly-promoted, out of his depth, detective Huldar turns to Freyja for her expertise with traumatized young people. Freyja, who distrusts the police in general and Huldar in particular, isn't best pleased. But she's determined to keep little Margret safe. It may prove tricky. The killer is leaving them strange clues: warnings in text messages, sums scribbled on bits of paper, numbers on the radio.
