Historia
Princess Harriet has absolutely no interest in brushing her hair, singing duets with woodland animals, or any other typical princess activities. So when a fairy tells a very bored Harriet about 12 mice princesses who are cursed to dance all night long, she happily accepts the quest and sets off with a poncho of invisibility and her trusty battle quail. But when she arrives at the Mouse Kingdom, she discovers there's more to the curse than meets the eye, and trying to help is dangerous business...even for a tough princess like Harriet.

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

Up there with the best fanfic I've read
Revisado: 10-10-24
other fandom denizens will recognize this for the high compliment it is. Sexier than most commercially published fiction that isn't specifically marketed as romance, but without making the sex the sole focus. Characters that really make me feel seen, and the delightful subversion of tropes I've come to rely on from Kingfisher.

Historia
The Borderlands aren't like anywhere else. Don't try to smuggle a phone or any other piece of technology over the wall that marks the Border - unless you enjoy a fireworks display in your backpack. (Ballpoint pens are okay.) There are elves, harpies, and - best of all as far as Elliot is concerned - mermaids. Elliot? Who's Elliot? Elliot is 13 years old. He's smart and just a tiny bit obnoxious. Sometimes more than a tiny bit. When his class goes on a field trip and he can see a wall that no one else can see, he is given the chance to go to school in the Borderlands.

Historia
In an alternate 1880s London, angels inhabit every public building, and vampires and werewolves walk the streets with human beings in a well-regulated truce. A fantastic utopia, except for a few things: Angels can Fall, and that Fall is like a nuclear bomb in both the physical and metaphysical worlds. And human beings remain human, with all their kindness and greed and passions and murderous intent. Jack the Ripper stalks the streets of this London too. But this London has an Angel. The Angel of the Crows.

I wish KA were queer
Revisado: 01-22-24
the Holmes retellings are delightful and the prose is witty and engaging. I just wish (as i have wished with her other books too) that the author had a defter touch when addressing topics of gender and sexuality. her mindset feels like it comes out of the 1990s, and the book probably would have been hailed as groundbreaking if it had been published then. These days, though, it reads as though the author, while a genuine and well meaning ally, has not kept up with the advances in queer theory and culture since then, possibly/probably from lack of personal reasons to do so. (i am, not to put too fine a point on it, deathly tired of the Lovelorn Lesbian cliche.)

I wish these had been narrated by a woman, but given that they picked a man, Kevin R. Free was the perfect choice. he gives a masterful performance of a fabulous book. Highly recommended.

Many consider this rich social commentary to be Jane Austen's finest novel. It is certainly among her more famous ones. Austen sets her entertaining study of manners and misconceptions against the backdrop of a class-conscious society in 18th century England.
