Historia
Whether pondering black holes or predicting discoveries at CERN, physicists believe the best theories are beautiful, natural, and elegant, and this standard separates popular theories from disposable ones. This is why, Sabine Hossenfelder argues, we have not seen a major breakthrough in the foundations of physics for more than four decades. The belief in beauty has become so dogmatic that it now conflicts with scientific objectivity: Observation has been unable to confirm mindboggling theories, like supersymmetry or grand unification, invented by physicists based on aesthetic criteria.

Important points, unfortunate conversational style
Revisado: 05-07-25
The points addressed were very important and author is to be commended for addressing them! However, these were not explained with clear hard hitting methodology. For example, the key concept of fine tuning parameters in theories was never well explained, precluded by the conversational style. Also, the question of the statistical significance of theories with many adjustable parameters, ie degrees of freedom, was not addressed (e.g. 20 parameters for at least one model) . Finally, book is more comprehensible for professional physicists, not for layman.

Historia
The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

Repetitious near poetic rendition of simple idea
Revisado: 04-07-25
Summation of book: there is water in the desert and it is hard to find and there are occasional surprises. Same idea over and over. Authors main intention may have been a poetic style, which he does well and should have written it as straightforward poetry. Most interesting part was discussion of the organisms in some of the hidden pools of water. To repetitive for me.

Historia
Argentine poet Jorge Luis Borges was madly in love when his life was shattered by painful heartbreak. But the breakdown that followed illuminated an incontrovertible truth—that love is necessarily imbued with loss, that the one doesn’t exist without the other. German physicist Werner Heisenberg was fighting with the scientific establishment on the meaning of the quantum realm’s absurdity when he had his own epiphany—that there is no such thing as a complete, perfect description of reality.

Obscurantist, at times incoherent
Revisado: 04-07-25
Much of book is yet another rehash of history of 20th Century physics delivered with pompous obscurantist rhetoric. Author seems to be trying to say something about nature of reality and time but unable to state it in a simple straightforward fashion. I gave up.

Worth reading or hearing but not well executed
Revisado: 01-24-25
The bad: Narration is mostly done with forlorn, resigned, and depressing tone. There are multiple prolonged speeches that sound like sermons, generally undesirable in fiction. There is massive amount of detail unrelated to the main messages and a plethora of unnecessary characters. Author constantly injects political viewpoints taken as fact. Characters rant about evils of money and
favor socialized medicine if not outright socialism. Author appears to have no knowledge of how such systems actually operate e.g British NHS.
The good: Buried under all of this unneeded material, political rhetoric, and sermons, are very accurate observations of the problems that technology has brought medicine, making the book worth reading if you are not aware, I tried to stick it out but, tired of the preaching and naive mentality, sent it back.
House of God was far superior.

Historia
In Fluke, myth-shattering social scientist Brian Klaas takes a deep-dive into the phenomenon of random chance and the chaos it can sow, taking aim at most people’s neat and tidy version of reality. The book’s argument is that we willfully ignore a bewildering truth: but for a few small changes, our lives—and our societies—could be radically different.

Good on Flukes but veers off topic
Revisado: 01-06-25
Narration excellent. The theme of flukes and random occurrences having major and unpredictable consequences is excellent. However, author goes off the rails into a lengthy and naive advocacy of strict determinism, contradicting much of what was said earlier. As with most advocates of determinism who “choose” to advocate this, their position is not falsifiable because that would require
tracing every event back to the origin of the universe to prove or disprove (for starters). Hence, per Popper, strict determinism is religion, like the Greek fates, not science. Hence only 4 stars!

Historia
Saul Bellow evokes all the rich colors and exotic customs of a highly imaginary Africa in this acclaimed comic novel about a middle-aged American millionaire who, seeking a new, more rewarding life, descends upon an African tribe. Henderson's awesome feats of strength and his unbridled passion for life win him the admiration of the tribe - but it is his gift for making rain that turns him from mere hero into messiah. A hilarious, often ribald story, Henderson the Rain King is also a profound look at the forces that drive a man through life.

Narration Fantastic and Great Plot
Revisado: 12-27-24
As usual for Bellow, deeper ideas are subtle . The protagonist gradually and systematically turns his liabilities into assets and transforms himself . There is much symbolism along the way. Unusual for Bellow, the plot becomes a page turner. Narration is is amazing and brings the book alive.

A plea for Government Transparency
Revisado: 09-04-24
Professional skeptics will reflexively label this book as full of so-called conspiracy theories and try to smear the author because that is how such skeptics make a living. It is true that there are obvious fakers in field of UFO xxxxx narratives. However, this author’s main thrust has been to get govt to release data he has seen. This is not the route a charlatan would take. The book is also worth reading for its detailed description of how govt can, in fact, keep information secret and engage in coverups for years. Anyone following current events has seen this in recent years.

Historia
A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his friend, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon, a journey that, McBride promised, would be “a walk in the park.” Against his better judgment, Fedarko agreed to the scheme. The ensuing ordeal, which lasted more than a year, revealed a place that was richer, and far more complex, than anything the two men had imagined.

Historia
When someone is labeled a nihilist, it's not usually meant as a compliment. Most of us associate nihilism with destructiveness and violence. Nihilism means, literally, "an ideology of nothing". Is nihilism, then, believing in nothing? If we can learn to recognize the many varieties of nihilism, Nolen Gertz writes, then we can learnto distinguish what is meaningful from what is meaningless. In this addition to the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Gertz traces the history of nihilism in Western philosophy from Socrates through Hannah Arendt and Jean-Paul Sartre.
