Historia
Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry.

Revisado: 08-12-24
Once again, Isaacson is incredible at telling you the exact right level of information in an entertaining way. This book was the perfect recounting of Da Vinci's life - not too little, not too much. And wow, do I have a much greater appreciation for his life.

Historia
Dr. Philip C. Plait sets the record straight on many modern hoaxes and myths. Appalled that millions of Americans don't believe in the moon landing, or that an egg stands on its end only on the vernal equinox, Plait hilariously spills the truth and informs us of scientific inaccuracies in our everyday vernacular.

Historia
Fascinated by our pervasive terror of dead bodies, mortician Caitlin Doughty set out to discover how other cultures care for their dead. In rural Indonesia, she observes a man clean and dress his grandfather's mummified body. Grandpa's mummy has lived in the family home for two years, where the family has maintained a warm and respectful relationship. She meets Bolivian natitas (cigarette-smoking, wish-granting human skulls) and introduces us to a Japanese kotsuage.

Revisado: 08-01-22
Since the topic of death is often ignored, I appreciated a candid look into it from someone who has a real passion for the subject matter. Its half a history book, half an anthropology book, and all entertaining.

Historia
Here, anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: He shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods - that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

I Feel Like I Understand the World Differently Now
Revisado: 07-21-22
This is one of those rare books that makes me feel like I have been moving through life with a completely false understanding of things. Despite its long length, every world seems to contribute to that feeling. A sincere thank you to Graeber for putting to words that strange feeling that's been at the tip of my brain for so long.

Historia
With all the passion, curiosity, and precise yet lyrical prose that have marked his previous books, Alan Lightman here explores the emotional and philosophical questions raised by discoveries in science, focusing most intently on the human condition and the needs of humankind. He looks at the difficult dialogue between science and religion, the conflict between our human desire for permanence and the impermanence of nature, the possibility that our universe is simply an accident, the manner in which modern technology has separated us from direct experience of the world, and our resistance to the view that our bodies and minds can be explained by scientific logic and laws.

Very meandering. I'm not sure what the point of this book was. It seems to be very all over the place, and then ends with a random "kids these days" rant.

Historia
During the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition in New York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard.

Strong start, slow middle, lazy ending
Revisado: 05-02-22
First of all, the narrator's North American accent is impeccable. As for the story, it pulls you right in with its exciting opener, but once past it, all momentum is lost. I actually really enjoy the long digressions on the natural sciences, but it seems to serve the narrative little. I was excited to see how our heroes would finally pull of a Great Escape style ending, but it feel like Verne simply got bored woth his own book and ended the tale as quickly and simply as he could. Oh well, I still enjoyed the ride.

I love Bryson's meandering writing style, its like listening to a friend tell a story - except imagine that friend is a great story teller. In a Sunburned Country, however, may may be more meandering and slower than many of his other titles, though it suits this one's theme well.
