Historia
Shortly before he died, Plenty Coups, the last great Chief of the Crow Nation, told his story - up to a certain point. "When the buffalo went away the hearts of my people fell to the ground", he said, "and they could not lift them up again. After this nothing happened." It is precisely this point - that of a people faced with the end of their way of life - that prompts the philosophical and ethical inquiry pursued in Radical Hope. In Jonathan Lear's view, Plenty Coups' story raises a profound ethical question that transcends his time and challenges us all.

Good until the end
Revisado: 11-24-24
As someone who knows a good deal about the Church and the papacy, I enjoyed this book and found it fairly realistic. That is until the wholly silly end. Even Homer nods.

Historia
The 1968 presidential race was a contentious battle between Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Republican Richard Nixon, and former Alabama governor George Wallace. The United States was reeling from the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy and was bitterly divided on the Vietnam War and domestic issues, including civil rights and rising crime. Drawing on previously unexamined archives and numerous interviews, Luke A. Nichter upends the conventional understanding of the campaign.

Good book, very bad reader.
Revisado: 01-22-24
The author gives a convincing revisionist account of 1969. Anyone interested in American politics will gain by reading this book. Unfortunately, the reader is really bad. Indeed, I often wandered if it not machine-read, but it was even worse than that. I would suggest redoing it. It helped to speed up things to 2x.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Historia
Lost in Thought is a passionate and timely reminder that a rich life is a life rich in thought. Today, when even the humanities are often defended only for their economic or political usefulness, Hitz says our intellectual lives are valuable not despite but because of their practical uselessness. And while anyone can have an intellectual life, she encourages academics in particular to get back in touch with the desire to learn for its own sake and calls on universities to return to the person-to-person transmission of the habits of mind and heart that bring out the best in us.

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Historia
Following the catastrophes of the 21st century - the pandemics, the environmental disaster, the end of oil, the ensuing chaos - people are doing whatever they can to get by and pursuing a simpler and sometimes happier existence. In little Union Grove in upstate New York, the townspeople are preparing for Christmas. Without the consumerist shopping frenzy that dogged the holidays of the previous age, the season has become a time to focus on family and loved ones.

The weakest so far but still a really good series.
Revisado: 01-04-21
This is a good series. Really good in parts. This one was weaker in parts. The author breaks with the smallness of his narrative and grasps for something more cinematic (in the bad sense) and it distracts. That said, I like this series and recommend it highly.

Revisado: 11-14-20
Christopher Beha is almost single-handedly keeping the tradition of the Catholic novel alive
His characters are finely drawn and representative of a whole generation of New York Catholics. He knows that faith lives even when only half-remembered.

Historia
A prominent conservative scholar traces the post-1960s divisions between the Right and the Left, taking aim at liberals' victimization of African Americans and their failure to offer a viable way forward for American society. The United States today is hopelessly polarized; the political Right and Left have hardened into rigid and deeply antagonistic camps, preventing any sort of progress.

Desperately needed on our campuses.
Revisado: 01-03-18
Listening to Steele’s profound defense of development over mere inclusion and freedom over mere performance for guilty whites, I wished that the hordes of diversity and inclusion officers would lend an ear. Steele goes to depths beyond the imaginings of hucksters like Coates and Dyson and by so doing fails to provide liberal whites what they most desire: absolution for the sins of others.
