This is one of my favorite Helen MacInnes novels. The story is Milne is wonderful, and though written in 1963, the political aspect is relevant for the current climate. In the hands of a different narrator, it would’ve been terrific.

This narrator is unable to do “accents”. The English, French, Russian and Italian accents sounded the same, with a high-pitched voice and accent of hitherto unknown origin. The American accent was correct.

My Favorite Jane Austen

Persuasion is my favorite of all the Jane Austen books. The heroine, Anne, has more depth of character due to her age, wisdom and principles. The father and older sister have no use or respect for her, the younger sister needs her, but won’t be guided by her.

While this novel takes a 6 month snapshot of several families, it moves faster than Mansfield Park.

Juliette Stevenson is one of my favorite British actresses and narrators. I like everything she’s ever done but my favorite narrations are those of Jane Austen and Juliet Stevenson together;
they are made for each other!

Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors, and Juliet Stevenson one of my favorite British actresses. Juliet’s talent for narration is perfectly suited for Jane Austen. She brings Austen’s characters to life with excellent comedic timing and pathos. I’m never bored with Austen as author and Stevenson as narrator/actress. Mansfield Park and its inhabitants are captivating in their familiarity; in Mansfield Park you’ll be reminded you of someone you know… a sweet one, the bossy one, the sparkling one, the serious one, the responsible one, the moral one, the placid one, the high-spirted one, the vain one, the over-confident one, the boring one, and the immoral one. They’re all there, in the novel, and in your life. Austen creates believable characters & Stevenson brings them beautifully to life!

When I was 14 years old, I borrowed this book from my mom, and promptly read every book written by Helen MacInnes thereafter. I’ve read some of the books several times, but it’s been years since I’ve picked one up.

Since 9/11 and 2016, I felt the relevance of these stories once again.

There are some things that never change; her characters will remind you of someone you know, friend or frenemy, perhaps a celebrity, or a politician. Her descriptions are vivid, and characters are strongly defined. Women are courageous and intelligent. The men are strong, capable, and respect smart women. Helen was far ahead of her time in this respect.

Since the majority of the books were written in the 30s and 40s, good vs evil, war (hot and cold), fascism, terrorism, counterterrorism, kidnapping, spies, intrigue, and relationships are common threads, and extremely relevant to today’s world.

I searched high and low for audio and digital recordings of these books, but couldn’t find any.

In 2017 or 2018, I called Audible and asked them if they would consider adding Helen MacInnes to their library. I found her books here 3 weeks ago, and am thrilled! I’m listening to all the books in order of publication (except Friends and Lovers, which isn’t in the Audible Library yet).

Thanks to the estate of Helen MacInnes, and Audible for making an agreement & releasing these gems!

Bless Kate Reading for outstanding narration!

The story is as good as I remember. Scott Brick’s narration, acting and voice characterizations are excellent!

Tom Clancy is a detailed and descriptive storyteller. I have a clear vision when I read (now listen to) his works. I’m excited to revisit the stories I read & enjoyed in high school and college!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Michelle is a very good writer, and a good storyteller. I love her journey and felt I was meeting a kindred spirit while reading this book.

The narration is very good, and the story is fascinating. I love true stories, and to hear a person’s life story is a favorite pastime.

Overall, the book is sprites, hopeful, uplifting and intelligent. I savored it, and will ‘read’ it again!

This is the first Maria Semple book I've read, and I look forward to reading 'This One is Mine'. I thought Maria has outstanding character development, and the story kept me guessing, and laughing. I thought the narrative performance was above average and enjoyed the performance very much.

I thought the premise of the story was fine. I just felt that the author's style was a laborious. The two main characters both have issues and instead of gently interjecting those issues every now and again, It was hammered over and over and over. It was found tiresome. Additionally, this is a period piece, and 21st century language was used for a story set in the 19th century; it was irksome. I thought the narrator was good.
