I ran out of Marion Chesney and M.C. Beaton books to read and was feeling a bit lost until I stumbled across Mrs. Jeffries. Listening to the characters book after book has made me form a bond to the series and the unlikely family that has formed between the characters.

I look forward visiting this time set in Victorian London that allows me to revel in history and indulge in ponder the nuances of human nature and societal norms as told through a removed era from my own for perspective. Adding in murder, gossip, and a cozy kitchen for tea and sleuthing is a welcomed bonus!

Thoroughly enjoyable murder mystery that gives you all the facts in order to speculate the whodoneit independently or to just listen to the story as it unfolds. I have not been disappointed yet by M.C. Beaton or Marion Chesney’s books yet and I’ve read and listened to over 100 of her entertaining stories. She was an articulate writer who loved to leave historical morsels for readers to enjoy, whether for the regency period outlining the socioeconomic nuances and innovations forged out of the discomfort of “needs must” from an unlikely, yet united household of “Poor Relations”, or present day characters finding themselves in similar circumstances due to cultural divides, societal demands, and the cognitive dissonance it takes to overcome classist and sexist discrimination beyond any financial status that can, at times, ironically unify or alienate us all…or lead us to muuuurrrrdaaaa.

I’m always skeptical when finding a new author, but after listening to this book I am keen to search for more of Joanna Davidson Politano’s works. The narrator, Sarah Nichols offered an overall soothing tone and varied character to each personality in the book. The story offered an enjoyable depth and I highly recommend it!

There is a good internal dialogue for the main characters adding a likability towards Timothy as he slowly matures throughout the story and a warmth towards Maryann as her vulnerability emerges. His shallow ideals of love reflect the deficit of meaningful relationships and monetary security within his immediate family history. The dichotomy between societal standards of love and beauty and the actualities of finding authentic love is an interesting quandary that was explained well by the author.
