Described as American Gods meets The Avengers, Paternus combines myths from around the world in a modern story of action and intrigue that is “urban fantasy on the surface, but so much more at its core!”

Fantastic!
Revisado: 04-12-22
This is a fantastic blend of ancient mythology and modern times. It takes Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and blends it with the brutality of George RR Martin’s GOT. I highly recommend it.

Historia
Stealing a shard of a dead god’s blood should have been enough adventure for a lifetime. For William Reis, it was just the beginning. William has a single goal in his life, to succeed where generations of others have failed, and gain admittance to the Smithing Guild of Palnor. Men and women from the Reach have tried for years, but all have failed. They have failed for a single reason, a commandment from the Church of Amder. No one from the Reach can ever gain entrance to the Guild. A decree that remains unknown all but the Masters of the Guild, and even they don't know why.

Blacksmith gold
Revisado: 05-20-21
I won’t say this was a fast paced book like some others, but it did not disappoint and it did not slow down. Pulling some standard genre pieces, such as the small town boy secretly destined for greatest, it still brought something new feeling to the basic fantasy. It did not overly rely on magic, though it was there, nor an abundance of fantastical beasts (also there).
BoaFG still a story about Will trying to achieve his life long goal of becoming a Guild Blacksmith, something people from The Reach never could do. What follows is a Will being thrust into an ancient war, dead gods looking to be resurrected, church and guild political battles and one boy just trying to live his best life.
While it looks like there are more books in the series, this is a solid stand alone I would highly recommend.

Reasonable sequel, but still not a strong story
Revisado: 05-06-21
First, the narration was somewhat distracting due to the fact that the sound of the voice constantly changing as if they did different recordings in different areas with a varying level of sound cancellation and then just spliced it together. It did not sound crisp as polished at all. Not that I am blaming the narrator for that though.
As for the story, the transition between book one to two recap was reasonably done in a pretty natural and seamless way. It saying it was perfect, as it was clearly a recap of book 1, but it did not distract from the story.
However, I don’t remember book one talking about this being an alternative America, rather than a fractured and dystopian America. Certain elements that are brought up in this book make that clear, but feels random and forced into the book to emphasize it is. It the same America. It is fine if this is a alternative history, but it needs to be worked in more naturally from the start rather than just start talking about King Abraham Lincoln.
Crimson Reign, following in the footsteps of The Fractured Prism is to cliché. It pulls from many other books like Red Rising, just not as strong and intriguing. It doesn’t help that the dialogue between Ivan and the princess does not feel organic. There are plenty of Young Adult books that are written so anyone can read them, but this one is better left in the hands of the actual YA readers.

Interesting start
Revisado: 04-29-21
This story starts out like it was trying to shock you. They introduce the two main characters as thieves/con artist. For me it didn’t quiet feel right. It felt like I was jumping into a story that was already started and I was behind. The book continues this way for a while, building the various characters’ stories up. Personally, I found it hard to follow through the audio book, but that’s on me far more than the writer or narrators.
In a similar style, the world building slowly develops, introducing various factions and races. Yet like with the characters, I felt just a little missing.
Overall, the story was a well told one about a misfit group of characters that join on a quest to recapture a stolen dagger. Intrigue and deception follow suit and nothing goes according to plan, as it usually doesn’t. As the story builds, so does the mystery of where it is going. Though the ending is very abrupt I look forward that next book to see where these characters go and how this war unfolds.

Historia
Five months after the heartbreaking events on a Pacific island, Maggie waits for Marcus and the team to return. The Travelers who finally show up to collect her aren't who she expected. A snake-woman, an injured Traveler, and the complications of leap-frogging through decades of civil unrest all stand in her way. While Maggie fights her way back to Marcus, the collectives coalesce, power shifts, and the one called B puts sinister plans into action. If Maggie can’t stop him, her individuality - perhaps her very identity - will be ripped away before she can catch her breath.

Better but didn’t go far
Revisado: 04-27-21
Book 2 comes out stronger than book 1. That is mostly because the second doesn’t get weighed down with the burdensome explanations of the world’a history and the developed powers as is able to just tell the story. However, this story, while interesting and fun to listen to, doesn’t advance the plot line as much as it could have. Yes, there is plenty that goes on, with new characters and powers, but it doesn’t have the feel of major plot points moving forward. The grand finale actually makes it feel more that way with more questions raised than answered. Still, this sets the next book to be a powerhouse, which some questions hopefully answered, such as who Doc really is (just answer the question we already know the answer for) and Maggie’s premonitions (we know they aren’t fragments of her past).

"...Sometimes, the ones you least suspect are the ones that should worry you the most...." People aren't always what they seem, as Red has experienced all too well. Strangers are feared, towns are avoided, and everyone's intentions are scrutinized... even those closest to her. Her coveted ability has been revealed to far too many people, and now that a tiny heartbeat thumps and grows beneath her own, the risk has never been greater.

Strong finish
Revisado: 04-21-21
The third entry of the series goes right for the jugular. While I felt the second was a little weaker than the first, this one kicks it up a notch. In a near Game of Thrones style telling, the slaughter is rampant. Angela Scott pulls no punches and often leaves you shocked, even if sometimes it felt obvious. My only complaint would be the similarity towards he end of book 2. At least this was a quick diversion and not a major plot point, but rather a clean up.

Revisado: 03-01-21
I did not find this book to be as good as the first one. The story wasn’t bad, but it didn’t hold my Attention like that one.It was a decent continuation but just missed some pizzazz. I am hoping that book 3 wraps up the story in a stronger way.

Monotone struggles with lackluster connection
Revisado: 02-13-21
I had a very difficult time trying to get into this book. I didn’t feel any connections to the characters and the story didn’t have any strength behind it. Possibly this is in part due to the monotonous narrator. Listening to him was drier than any other narrator I have listened to, leading to a diminished listening experience.

It began with a hallucination. A time loss. A mistake. A strange man reaching out to her. All part of a tourist trap, Maggie is sure, and she's lucky it wasn't worse. Yet something about her life changed that day, and she can't put her finger on what. She forces herself to move on but can never shake the inexplicable emptiness she feels.

Good action but falls flat
Revisado: 10-14-20
This book had a good amount going for it, and hope it follows through in book two, but amidst all the action many things fell flat. The concept of the story was interesting and packed a decent punch, but the character development and “magic” system was difficult to chew. I understand all new SFF/dystopian need some explanations of how things are in the world, but the way it was written out in “Persistence of Vision” was slow and childish. Childish in the way of a condescending adult explaining to a child how the way of the world works. This took away from the connections one gets to the characters in the book, leaving it a little flat.
Hopefully, with most of the world building out of the way, book two cleans it up as it does have potential.

Nobody has taken part in the Devil’s Run annual road race as often as Dutch McGuire and lived to tell the tale. The racecourse circumnavigates the post-apocalyptic ruins of Teijouan, and with a choice between being eaten by the monstrous Kaiju that prowl the island’s devastated cities or murdered by her fellow racers, the odds against surviving another Run, let alone winning it, are slim.

Post-apocalypse death race
Revisado: 10-07-20
Devil’s Road is a post-apocalyptic, death race through multi-dimensional monsters fill with backstabbing, hitman and a few twists. It starts with a jailbreak and keeps the action going throughout. Dutch is a fun lead to follow and easily likable. Definitely worth the listen.
